RCA Press Release for September 28, 1981

M*A*S*H Heads RCA Video Discs Hit Parade; Average Household Surveyed Owns 15 Albums

A telephone survey of more than 1,000 owners of RCA video disc players revealed that the movie "M*A*S*H" continues to lead the RCA "SelectaVision" VideoDiscs best seller list, it was announced today by Stuart Gray, division vice president, program and market research.

The newly completed survey also showed that these owners, on average, already have purchased 15 video disc albums and have definite plans to buy additional discs in the near future. Mr. Gray said this rate of acquisition exceeds all pre-launch expectations.

The RCA video disc system became available at retail in March 1981.

Another finding of this survey is the higher incidence of video disc player purchases in homes that already have pay cable and video cassette recorders, indicating compatibility among these markets. These homes also purchase an above-average number of video disc albums.

Rounding out the top 10 selling albums are: "The Muppet Movie," "The Black Stallion," "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea," "Heaven Can Wait," "Star Trek -- The Motion Picture," "Casablanca," "The Godfather," "Grease," and "Fiddler On The Roof."

Of the new titles issued this summer, Mr. Gray noted, "Airplane!," "Goldfinger," "Urban Cowboy" and "The Pink Panther" are showing strength. He said these titles ranked very high in intent to buy in the May survey of video disc owners.

Of the non-feature films in RCA's catalog, the best sellers include "Star Trek -- The Menagerie" and "Star Trek -- The City On The Edge of Forever," both from the acclaimed television series; "Disney Cartoon Parade, Vol. 1"; "A Charlie Brown Festival"; "Terrytoons, Vol. 1 Featuring Mighty Mouse"; and "The Count of Monte-Cristo."
