Subject: Bumpy, skippy pictures

Does anyone have any suggestions on why so many of my CED's skip and
jump around? I just replaced the stylus and the disks seem to be in
good shape. Someone wrote once that I should clean the lubricant off
the disks. With what? Is that bad for the disk? Did these disks
always skip, even when they were new? They seem to have an even worse
life expectancy than a audio LP. Any specific cleaning advice would be

Subject: VideoDisc Book

For those who are interested, there was a book published about the
VideoDisc project. The title is "RCA and the VideoDisc - The business
of research" by Margaret B.W. Graham. The book is published by the
Cambridge University Press.

The book is an interesting historical perspective of technology
development as well as the project problems that occured.

One significant issue was in marketing of a video product. The first
players were not stereo and you could not record on them. These were
apparently significant issues with the buying public. On the positive
side the programming was cheap, $15 to $25 vs $75 to $100.

Subject: CED Needle......

Can CED skipping be needle related??? My most recent CED player was
seldom used..... The person sold it to me for $3.00 with the Jane Fonda
disk.... He said that he recieved the player as a gift and hardly ever used
it and never bought any other disks. Anyway, what I noticed is that my
disks hardly skip at all on this new CED player. They play beautifully....
So, I might end up just buying needles for my other players and see if it
solves the problem.....

I wish I would have seen the Nightline where they hold up a CED.... That
would have been Kool!!! I'm wondering if DVD will be the next CED.....
Everyone (except on person who bought one) that I've talked to so far
agrees with me on the pixelated picture... Sure DVD's look fine on small
monitors... But, try blowing them up on a big screen TV.... You start
seeing great big pixels changing..... CED's and LD's aren't perfect but at
least you don't get pixels...... Watching a DVD on a big screen is like
trying to magnify a .gif or .bmp file on a Computer......

Well, later........
