I've been interested in getting a hold of one of these for a while. I have a huge interest in dead video formats. A while back I came across a few discs at a thrift store and bought them, thinking I'd be able to find a player easily and cheaply..

Well I finally found a post on Craig's list, someone giving away their player and 50 discs. I was really excited, and I went and picked them up.

The player is an RCA player. Model SFT 100 W.

The player seems to function alright. The only things that seems wrong is that it makes a loud noise when a disc is in and I switch to unload and there's a lot of squeaking as the belt drive halts. Maybe just needs some lubrication?

But a lot of the discs are staticy and skippish, or both. Some are worse than others. One of the discs I played so far played pretty flawlessly. A couple others played okay, with minor static in parts. But I haven't tested nearly all of them yet..

I was wondering what I should do.. I just got this player, and apparently it had been sitting in a closet before I got it. Should I open it up and try to clean it out? Does the stylus need to be cleaned?

And how about these discs.. I have no idea how I should try to clean them. And I assume the ones that are staticy and skippy need to be cleaned. I haven't attempted anything yet, because I don't know what will damage it.

Thanks for any forthcoming advice. If there are any questions about my player and/or discs, I'd be happy to answer them.
