US CED Title Database

This is a listing of the approximately 1,700 NTSC CED titles that I know exist (meaning I have actually seen the disc and scanned the bar code directly off the caddy). An accompanying VaporWare List has about 200 titles which I have not seen, most of which probably do not actually exist. To qualify for listing a title had to be pressed during the 1981 through 1986 CED market era and have a unique universal product code. This means that label variations and test pressings are not included, but titles issued twice are included. About 70 titles were issued twice, usually by RCA initially and later by CBS, or with monaural sound initially and later with stereo sound. The accompanying CED Label and Caddy Variations List explains and lists variations on titles with identical UPC's. While the RCA CED Test Disc Listing contains CED test pressings known to still exist in collections.

Here is a sample entry from the database with the various fields explained:

The title is listed first. Titles starting with A, AN, and THE are listed alphabetically according to the second word of the title.

(2) indicates this title is on two discs. (4) indicates a title on four discs.

** indicates a title with stereo sound that should also have Dolby Surround Sound encoding according to the Dolby Laboratories List. A single asterisk indicates a stereo title without Surround Sound, and three asterisks indicate a title that specifically references Surround Sound on the caddy label. CED titles having surround sound encoding may be played with receivers on the Dolby Pro Logic setting.

[1976] indicates this is the 1976 version of this movie title, not the 1954 version, which is also available on CED. Square braces are used to differentiate identical, consecutive titles in the database. These identical titles could be completely different program content, as in this example. Or they could be monaural and stereo releases of the same material, or separate releases of the same material with different UPC's, and usually with different caddy art work.

{76476131340} lists the universal product code for the title between the two curly braces. The UPC provides additional information explained more fully in the RCA VideoDisc Universal Product Codes document. Ten multi-disc CED titles have different UPC's on each disc, and these titles have all the UPC's listed within the curly braces. To match the database UPC with the number printed under the barcode on the caddy, the final digit (checksum digit) should be ignored.

U Indicates this is an Uncommon title. Most CED titles exist at about the same frequency of occurrence which was designated as Uncommon in the CED Rarity Assessment. The remaining titles are more common or rarer (in some cases considerably rarer) than this norm and were assigned to one of the four other designations accordingly. Here's a summary of all the ratings:
