Comments:	I have been a record collector since age 14. That sort of
grew into Laserdiscs, DVDs, and all sorts of obsolete home theater
technology. Stumbled onto CEDs on eBay and got into those. I love that
there is one place on the 'net with this much information on them.
Thanks Tom.

Comments:	Thank God that somebody had the wherewithal to develop a
site dedicated to CEDs! I've had mine since new...even with the
promotional disk. I remember how popular these units were and the rental
places devoted to them. I also remember when the discs went on sale
because the laser machines were picked to represent RCA..:-( I always
personally felt betrayed by RCA, but I've never been able to junk the
machine....now maybe I don't have to!

Dimensia Home Entertainment System. Well as you can imagine there are no
manuals that came with it. The only thing missing I believe is the vcr if
it ever did come with one. The wood is in great shape. I do not have any
records so I have not been able to test out the record player(I suppose I
could pick some up at Goodwill) I do have to questions for you though: 1)
is there a menu for the tv I when I try to switch channels it only goes to
channel 2, I have to maunally push the numbers on the pad 2) do you know
where I might get a copy of the owners manual
I would truly appreciate any help you can give me. I think have a real
find here but would like to enjoy the system more completely

Comments:	A page on your site about the DEC pdp-1, Precursor to the
Minicomputer has a few slight incorrections. The pdp WAS a minicomputer,
what we use now are microcomputers. DEC stands for Digital Equipment
Corporation. I have their Starion microcomputer, made in 1996, still
going strong at 133 MHz. It was their last product before being gobbled
by Compaq. DEC encroached Intel territory and had sunk their fortune
into designing a superfast CPU chip called Alpha and they never got it
into production, unfortunately.

I have laserdisc, vcd, svcd & dvd (Yes I am a sad BRIT!!!) But I

I have aprox 140 UK spec discs (40+ titles, duplicated all new & sealed)

I am not intrested in making a profit, as long as I can cover my costs

Comments:	Wow, this is a really cool website. I had repaired one of
these machines several years ago. We were the only shop that would even
touch it, all the others laughed at our customer.
I just wanted to say that capacitance discs are one of the lost
treasures that we have here in the US. That is, we invented something
that is extremely reliable, then abandoned it. Laser discs rely on thin
sheets of metal that can corrode easily. These discs are similar to
records, they are plastic. What I found interesting was the thin oil
coat. I have been using a wet-transfer method to copy LP records for
four years now, to reduce surface noise and "scraping". When a thin coat
of rubbing alcohol is applied, the records become transparent, many times
making the hiss of the master tape audible. To all of those who worked
on this project, your work is certainly remembered. Hard disk drives
would not have come this far if it wasn't for your efforts. Those discs
are a symbol of our technological advances, and the fact that they still
play today, 20 years later, says alot!
The sad truth is that much of the things we say are "new" are not at all
new technologies. The laser disc was actually invented in 1972 by IBM,
but using a "hoaky" sound vibration method. The flat screen, gas-plasma
displays were demonstrated by Zenith in 1973. 30 years later, they
finally have them on the shelves at electronics stores! (see popular
electronics from that era if you don't believe me) I'm glad to find this
site, there are lots of these discs floating around used book and
thrift stores. The only part of the dimensia system I have is the remote.
It works with almost every 80's style RCA TV and VCR.

Comments:	Hello. I found this site through the IMDb and hung around
a while reliving my memories of this nearly forgotten format. My first
memory of the existence of CEDs goes back to January 1982, when I visited
Disney World with my family. On the long line into Space Mountain, there
were various dioramas featuring the latest advances in technology. Among
them was RCA's just-released VideoDisc player. Until then, the only way of
seeing a film at home on demand (instead of waiting for it to come on TV)
that I had known was watching an actual 16mm film print. Obviously, that
was a cumbersome process, and the idea of just playing a movie on TV was
a dream come true. Only one family I knew actually bought a player, and
I remember watching a few titles -- but forget which specific films.
Anyway, in 1984, we got our first VCR (a Sanyo Beta!), and soon enough
CEDs fled the scene. As I remember, they weren't missed because of the
skipping and the few titles available (compared to VHS and even Beta).
But I will always remember the format for its innovation in (and
practical invention of) the home video market. Good luck and further
succes with your site!

record player?)! I collect alot of old music and video stuff, favorites
being Betamax and vinyl; also got some Laserdisc stuff including some
old MCA "Discovision" titles which my fairly modern Pioneer player seems
to handle fine. Got interested in CED when I found an RCA SJT-300
player and a handful of disks at a garage sale. Since then, I've added
more disks. Then, I was at an estate sale about two weeks ago and landed
me an SJT-400 (!!) player w/ original box, manuals, remote & cables;
along w/ 40 movies and an unopened NOS replacement stylus! Also took
home a SuperBeta deck from the same sale. All for just over $100! The
former is in mint condition, works and sounds well! But what exactly
can you do w/ the control interface jack on the rear?

Comments:	Dear Tom:
I just checked out your CED page on the various adaptations of A
Christmas Carol (including animated versions), and I have to say, I
love it, especially the pictures from the 1978 cartoon The Stingiest
Man in Town. I was wondering, could you please, please send me some
pictures of B.A.H. Humbug, the cricket narrator of that cartoon? I'm
a big fan of B.A.H. Humbug, and would love to have some screengrabs
of him. I have looked all over for pictures of B.A.H. Humbug, but all
I have been able to find is the tiny image of him on Ebenezer's
shoulder on your page, and a black and white picture where he looks
a little different than he does in the cartoon. I just want these
pictures for my own enjoyment, and I will gladly pay for them if
need be, just name your price. You can send the pictures to my
snail mail address:
13861 78 Avenue
Surrey, BC
V3W 2X9
Canada
or send them attached to an e-mail to my e-mail address:
cherrycharmca*yahoo.ca
I really hope you will consider my request and send me some pictures of
B.A.H. Humbug from The Stingiest Man in Town, as pictures are hard to
find and since you have both the cartoon and screengrab equipment, I
thought you could help me. Thank you very much. Your A Christmas Carol
adaptations page is really cool, especially The Stingiest Man in Town
pictures. Again, thank you.
Sincerely,
Patricia McClain

old McDonalds commerical that featured a videodisk premium they had back
in the 80's. I remember the commercial showed someone being handed a

Comments:	Maybe someone can help me out. My SJT 100 player just
stopped playing yesterday. I've noticed lately that after I put the
disc in the machine it takes longer and longer before the movie starts.
Sometimes the movie would start 30 seconds into a film. I noticed that
it was doing this more often until finally yesterday the disc went in,
it began to rotate, and then nothing...no movie. Any ideas??
If you do please email me.

getting advice or help.
Yesterday I pulled out my SJT-400 to dub two Rocky and Bullwinkle CEDs
for a friend. (One has the only complete version of "Wossamotta U." on
home video.)
The loading mechanism wouldn't work, and there was the brief smell of
something burning.
Not having a service manual, and not seeing any visible damage, I don't
know where to start. I'm not even sure whether I should have the unit
fixed (merely to dupe two irreplaceable disks), or sell it for parts.
The unit is "complete," including accessories, instructions, box, and
all packing material, in excellent condition.
Suggestions, anyone?

what players I'm looking for when people are selling them on eBay and
don't offer much more of a description than "RCA SelectaVision player".

off my 1984 vintage CED player. I decided to see if CED was still alive
so began surfing the web and found not only your CED Magic site but also
the CED Central site. I already own about 21 CEDs and hope to add to
that. But best of all, I found your CED Magic site a wealth of
information I never knew existed about the CED story. Having been an RCA
employee for nearly ten years in the late '50s, I found your CED history
absolutely fascinating. Great job! I was first captivated by the thought
of sound and color movies being reproduced in the same manner that sound
alone is picked up from a record groove. I think Thomas Edison was onto
a great idea. Too bad he couldn't have been alive long enough to see
this happen! Thanks.

disk players since everyone I talk to doesn't seem to remember anything
pre-beta days. My Dad worked in a furniture store in Kamloops B.C.
throught the seventies / eighties and they used to have a video disk
rental section. We held on to the CED disk player after the store closed
down since they were just throwing them in the garbage. I recently ran
into someone my Dad used to work with and asked her if she remebered
those old video disk players. She said "hell yah. I've got about a stack
of 200 movies in my closet collecting dust" and she said I could take
them. I have since moved to Vancouver and still watch the old disk
player once in a while. I even found an old comic store down the street
which sells them. (Mint condition as well); though they are running low
but it's good to see they still exist out there and that some people do
still remember.
Cheers,
Steve McNaughton

Have copy of 1982 Interview with RCA Reseach Manager regarding CED's
invention and future. Incidently, I live 3 miles from where it all
stated, at the Princeton Labs. Interested in hearing from anyone who
has seen, or heard of the model "500" player. Never introduced but
apparently a few were built which played both sides without turning
over the disc!

player while a Senior Tech. Assoc. at Muppet labs (RCA Labs) back it the
1970's thru to 1999 when I retired. The CED player was one of the most
enjoyable products I ever had a hand in. It was a sad day when RCA
management decided to pull the plug on CED. Not too many years later RCA
met its demise too at the hands of "Neutron Jack" from GE. The people at
RCA were the ones who also made Color TV work. Working at RCA labs was
like being one of a large family. This website is a real tribute to
american ingenuity. Great job!

are still using these mothers. I found mine int he trash, about two days
after i found a copy of the last star fighter on a CED. There it was,
just sitting on the side of the street. Hellz yeah... And so i popped in
the last star fighter. I think I might need to replace the stylist... As
it seems to skipp a little too much.. But it worked. Hey all. U think
there might eb a way to turn my thing into a turntable scratching type
thing? I guess i have some crazy ideas here, but hey, who knows, make a

Comments:	Excellent Site!! I have a GEC V5000H machine which my wife
owned and asked me to fix, as I am interested in electronic gear (This
was how we met). As she wisely would not part with the machine for
cash, I had to marry her to make it my own. I am happy to say it is
still working today (7 years later), with 60 titles collected to date
(not bad considering less than 300 were released in the UK). Thanks for
all the info on these superb machines.

schools for the RCA CED. It was a neat system, though still a little
"buggy."
I mentioned on the rec.antiques.radio+phono newsgroup
that I long remembered the
haunting 1981 Fanfare and wished I'd made a recording of it. One of the
other members directed me to your site. Sure is nice to hear again and
brings back a lot of memories. Kind Regards,

after watching your Oregon Today clip from rec.games.vectrex. I thought
that anyone who has a collection of vintage electronica as wide and as
varied as yours must have an interesting page. I wasn't disappointed--
the depth of information is incredible. I mainly collect older gaming
systems, but I also love antique AV technology. I was amazed to discover
that I had never heard of RCA Video Discs, not once. What an amazing
technology--the idea of encoding video information on a much denser
vinyl record. I immediately hit three of the larger thrift stores in my
area looking for CED equipment and received only blank stares when I
described the equipment. Guess I'm not the only who has never been
introduced to the technology. Ah, well. There's always eBay. :)

1976-78. RCA distributor kept telling us about this disk product, but it
never seemed to arrive. RCA introduced a line of VCR's in 1978, and told
us the disk machine was just around the corner. Never arrived. I was
disappointed. Finally, after college and in a new job, I bought a video
disk player in 1982. Great machine. Remember how sad I was when I
finally had to toss it into the dumpster in 1989. Wish I had it now.
Thanks to this site I now know what was wrong with it and how to fix it!

they dropped to $10 or less. I paid $75 for my first machine.I now have
3 and the latest is a Radio Shack automatic start-up type. I have 2 RCA
machines in storage. We have about 80 titles in our collection and I
just watched the 'Battle of Britain' the other day. Everthing still
works fine. I was amazed to find out there was 1700 titles originally.
Every time we see a disc for sale to-day,it's always a title we already
own. Does that say something? Were there more pressings of certain
movies and fewer of others? I now understand that I can still buy
styluses from Thomson Products so I'm going to get hold of them in
Toronto and see if they can get one or two for me. We have used the
system constantly over the years and have never had a breakdown or
stoppage. I can't say the same thing for our VCRs. It's a shame that it
wasn't continued. I can't remember the last time I recorded something on
my VCRs. In fact one of them is a VCP which is the tape version of a CED
system player. We are convinced this machine and it's discs are going to
outlast us! Thanks for putting the site in place.

the years nearly 400 discs. You cannot beat the sound or view. I even
have the Star Wars trilogy on disc. Alas we are moving to a smaller
house with a lot less R&R storage room and must sell. A story for your
CED archives: I have had one of the sets repaired at Sears, a dedicated
repair lady got hooked on it and was able to get an RCA repair manual,
if I brought in a few discs for them to watch! I'll keep an eye on this

amazed at the picture as well as the sound quality, especially the
"stereo" feature. I purchased mine brand new in 1984 and have used it
every since. I still amaze my friends when I put a movie in to watch.
I was very disappointed to find out RCA really no longer exists. I hoped
that they may do a commerative movie for the CED player. The technology
that went into this unit is still amazing when you really go through one

CED player or discs for more than 15 years! I always wondered what
happened to the format. Now I'm all fired up and I've ordered movies

Comments:	Heyas fellas..... Monday, June 25th, 2001.
A friend of mine directed me to laserdiscs on eBay and then I stumbled
across the CED's and then ultimately this webpage. I wanted to tell
y'all that I've become OBCESSED with the nostalgia of the 80's and the
groove and vinyl technology that the CED System employed. I am a
collector of 80's stuff, such as Atari, Nintendo, etc etc. I am very
very pleased to announce that I ordered a SJT-300 player and some discs
this weekend from eBay! I can't WAIT to get it in the mail. I am now age
25. Unfortunately when I was 15, I accquired one of these players and I
knew what it was, but back then I was dumb and thought "A needle to play
a videodisc? How LAME" and promptly exploded the player with my
lawnmower and disposed of it. :-( I will always kick myself for that...
Anyway - thank you to the owner for this webpage. It allows the
continued NOSTALGIA of this system! It ROCKS!! :-) HUG!!
Chris
P.S. If anyone close to Los Angeles, or Orange Counties, CA has the CED
that the employees got when the company shut down, please contact me -
I'd like to see the disc and encode it to .MPG!!! Thanx! :-)
Happy CED'ing

anybody remembered these things or that they still are in circulation.
After reading through your site, I would like to start collecting CED's,
for the simple fact that this is really great american nostalgia. I am
currently an avid Atari collector and I think CED will go hand in hand
with that. Thanks for showing us old timers and the newer generation
what real innovation is!

though it was redundance to the laser disc player with slightly better
than vhs picture quality. The idea of the disc being protected by the

80-83. Would love to get in touch with others from the old group. Dont
own a player or any discs but the description of how the design worked
won over at least one technical interviewer back in 1986. It was amazing
that it all worked as well as it did. Probably the most amazing display
of nested analog feedback loops ever.
