Besides just subscribing to the forum and posting a spam message, another technique spammers use to try to avoid detection and deletion is to post an ambiguous reply to an existing topic.
If the date the member subscribed and the date of the reply are the same, the reply message is most likely spam and any links in it should be ignored. These messages get deleted within about a day of posting.
The next version of phpBB (now in beta) is supposed to have additional techniques for dealing with spammers, as this problem is rather small on CED Forum in comparison to some other boards that have thousands of legitimate members.
