There is a shop near me that has an old Mitsubishi front projection TV it's an all in one unit with the projectors built into the base and a curved screen. It appears to be in good condition, what should one of these cost now? How well do these TV's hold up over time?

I've seen these consistently sell in thrift stores in the $100 to $200 price range, but have never seen them priced higher than that, so it's unknown whether someone would pay $300 for such a TV.

Front projection TVs definitely have a retro appeal, having been off the market for nearly 25 years, and they seem to hold up about as well as single CRT units. Whether they will ever be highly collectable is debatable, due to their large size and the impending demise of the NTSC broadcast standard on April 7, 2009. After that, our old TVs will need a converter box to receive broadcast signals, but of course CED players will still work with them.

I stopped in there again the other day, the price on the TV was $200. I've dealt with the guy before, he usually drops the prices on his stuff quite a bit when you seem interested in something. I'd bet I could get it for $150 pretty easily. Unfortunately I don't currently have room for it, my fiance' would kill me if I brought something that big home. Wish I did have room for it though, that thing looks cool. I remember visiting my Great Uncle in Florida that had a TV like that, I watched Jaws on it while I was there and thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread.

I have a Sony KP-5040 50 inch front projector that I bought in December of 1983. It is still working and still our main TV. It has seen CED, Laser VHS and DVD.

Here's an Atari publicity photo circa 1982 showing the video game Space Invaders being played by a family on their Atari Video System X console with the RCA PFR100 television:

That console is a prototype of what became the Atari 5200 Videogame system when it was marketed in late 1982. The image was captured from a montage that appeared in a History Channel special a few years ago. If that prototype console still exists, its worth a LOT more than the PFR100 TV.
