Hello,

The disc loads up fine and the arm advances to the start of the disc, but the stylus lifter just keeps lifting the needle up and down, "--" is displayed, and the arm goes nowhere. And of course, no picture. Any thoughts?

This sounds like a problem with the stylus cartridge itself, so try the following test to confirm this.

Load a disc and let the pickup arm move to the playback position and start its repetitive clicking. Then unplug the player from the AC outlet with the disc still loaded and remove the player cover. Following the directions on the inside of the cover, advance the pickup arm inward about an inch as you would if removing the stylus cartridge, but leave the cartridge in place. Visually confirm that the center of the pickup arm is still over recorded grooves, then plug the player back into the AC outlet. If it now initiates playback, you have a stylus set down problem, if not, the problem is with the cartridge.

The set down problem can be corrected by loosening the Stepper Drive Rack and moving it slightly to the rear of the player. If the problem is in the cartridge, remove it and inspect the needle tip which may require cleaning with a very fine sewing needle. If the problem persists, the next step is to install a known-good cartridge in the player.
