I got my first CED player in 1990, from a friend who told me that if I helped him move, I could have his mom's "laserdisc" player. I didn't even know what CED was, but I wanted a laserdisc player, so I said 'ok'. Well, I got it home, plugged it in (it was an SJT-90), turned it on, and the door opened. I didn't have any laserdiscs to test it with, but the next day I rented two from the local video store. I took them home and actually tried to feed the laserdisc into the loading slot! It of course would not take it, so I took the cover off and put the disc directly on the turntable. I tripped a few switches to make it play, and nothing came on the screen (go figure). So I opened up the little compartment and found a cartridge instead of a laser, with a needle! It was then that I knew I did not have a laserdisc player. I returned the laserdiscs the next day (with a few added scratches from trying to load them in the slot LOL). Being a kid, I decided to demolish the CED player because I like taking things apart. It ended up in the trash. Of course, looking back now, I regret my stupidity... I have since bought 3 players (10 Years ago) off of ebay, an SGT-200 (my main player, still works) and two Sears players (one works perfectly, one doesn't). I also acquired another SJT-090 from a thrift store which works perfectly.

My first CED player was given to me by a paternal aunt. It was an RCA SJT 100 with about 50 films. It was given to her by her daughter when it first came out. I ended up with it in 94'. I've then amassed more than 200 films and have in addition to the SJT 100, I have an SJT 090, SFT 100 (non working), and a SJT 300 (non working). The SJT will go to get refurbished when time and money warrant.

I was living in American Samoa and purchased there my first player in 1981 - it was much less expensive then than the newly-introduced VCR. We had a total of six movies (for almost two years) and watched them over and over because there was virtually no TV. Since then I have collected 13 players and over 900 movies. I am looking to liquidate the entire collection, in one batch if possible. Anyone interested would have to pick the collection up in a truck because of the weight of the movies. You can contact me at marilyn_wilson@comcast.net.

Shocked Found an SKT-400 in excellent condition, with the Remote Commander at the local Goodwill store. Had lots of good discs as well. This was circa 2001, have never seen CED items since.

bought my first player in august
off ebay, here in the US, for a decent
price. along with the star wars trilogy,
and a few others i haven't watched..

its the rca sft100, and it works fine,
although i've had a hard time finding
cables for the rca connectors..went to
radio shack finally..

i'm capturing the video to computer,
so i don't have to keep playing the discs,
and it's working out ok, i've passed the
signal through a VCR i found that someone
threw out...and going to a video capture card..
looks decent with a few glitches..

will post a video on youtube soon..

later

My first player when I was about 8 or 10 years old was old faithful, the SFT-100. I still have it, reconditioned of course, along with an SJT-090 as well. That came from eBay. Honestly, do we collect these for any other reason than nostalic childhood connections we can't give up? I THINK SO.

I found my SJT-400 in a Goodwill in Greenwood, Indiana about 5-6 years ago for, I believe, $10. New stylus, new belts, installed fan per Tom's instructions, working great ever since. Also have a 90 series that was owned by my wife's grandparents.

My first experience with CED was babysitting for a neighborhood kid, whose dad, Robert Huck, worked on CED.

http://www.cedmagic.com/mem/whos-who/huck-robert.html

After the kid would go to bed, I would fire up the CED. I distinctly remember watching "Barbarella" and nearly going out of my mind because there were about 2 seconds of a topless woman in it... Gimme a break, I was like 14 at the time.

I first became interested in CED back in 2008 because I am a collector of vintage audiovisual equipment. A few years earlier, I saw some CEDs in a thrift store, but I did not buy them because I did not know what they were. In the Fall of 2009, I decided to start collecting CEDs, so I looked on Ebay for a good deal on a player. I found an auction for an RCA SFT100W along with some discs, so I placed a bid & won it. The discs arrived safely, but unfortunately, the CED player was badly damaged from improper packaging, which was just a small box with a piece of bubble wrap.

I decided to try & look for a CED player locally, and on Thursday, 25 February, there was a Craigslist posting for a lower end RCA SKT090 with 3 common discs from some people at a trailer park in El Cajon, California. The discs were "The Sting," "Star Wars" & "Raiders Of The Lost Ark."

Later, I decided I wanted a player with some more features, so I found an RCA SFT100W for sale in Mira Mesa, California, in San Diego, on a Web Site called The Collectable King. I went to the man's house, and he gave me the RCA SFT100W with the owner's manual & some Walt Disney CEDs.

Both of my CED players work perfectly, and I use them all the time.

Hey Krbsforty, thanks so much for reviviing this thread!!!! I love to read posts that started way back when! Then they were dormant for a few years, and someone else came along and picked it up and ran with it! Now you bring it to our time. I have told this story so many times, but I love to tell it. I got my first CED player brand new in or around August/September 1982. I remember this because I lost a sister in an auto accident on Oct 10th. I can't tell you how much comfort it brought me during that time in my life. Anyway, that was my first one, I kept it until 1985 or 6, and finally gave up and sold it with my 30+movies, and gave in to the V.C.R. I remember, back then always comparing the VCR to my CED player and saying the picture would never be as good as my SGT250! Fast forward to Sept 2011, 29 years later. Even before this time I had been a lurker on this site, I came at a time when NO ONE was posting, and I just spent time reading all the older posts. I was shocked that there were this many people who had carried our format into the 21st century. BOY AM I GLAD THEY DID! I found an SGT200 on Craigs list with 50 movies all for just 1500 dollars!!! I sent a couple of emails and phone calls to the gent, and I did my greatest job of talking the man down from 1500 to 50 dollars for all of it! Carolyn and I drove up that evening to pick the player and movies. I was in hog heaven!!! I was an owner again! I sold some of my Star Trek goodies from my collection and I started buying some on ebay, and repairing them for resale. After my 5th player, I began to realize that my disability prevented me from spending time with the players. After I sold the sixth and final player. I was given a gift of a VP2000 in the original box, and it looks like new! I love it!!! I bought an SJT400 from Howard (duckie) and then I received an SJT300 from my buddy deanjeep, that had some quirks to it. I took that one to CEDatum when we had the workshop, the jury is still out on that one:). Finally I received an SFT100 in the original box from Mark at the workshop, alnog with some noce movies:). So, after we buy our house, and get settled, I have this great shelf thatI am planning on displaying all of them on the two tierd shelf.

I'm very new to CED's. I never even heard about them til last November (2010) when I found some at a Toy Show for $3 each. I originally thought they were laserdiscs and I liked the large cover art. I picked up Raider of the Lost Ark, Friday the 13th and two He-Man discs. Would have also grabbed a Star Wars one but they wanted $25 for it.

Anyway, I read up a bit on CED's and thought they were pretty cool, but I assumed I'd never see a player to try the few CED's I have out on. Last Wednesday I was on the other side of town and saw a Goodwill I hadn't seen before so I stopped in hoping to score some vintage toys but instead a found a SFT100 marked down to $2.50! I plugged it up and saw the load signal come on and decided to grab it.

After checking it out a bit I found out I need a stylus and maybe someother work (The stylus arm doesn't move on it's own, I'm thinking the motor might not be working but I haven't fully checked everything out) I count myself lucky that at least the CED's will spin in it Smile

Congrats on your new treasure! You can get a stylus from CEDatum, and any belts from this site. 2.50! Hey I'll double the money if you want to sell it!!!! Seriously, you can the player going , but, let me warn you, IT IS HABIT FORMING!!! You will become a CED junkie! I don't think there is a single active collector who has only one player. So, you have only just begun this journey!!!

Don't tell me that Smile Between the Toy collection and the Video Game collection, I don't have much room left!

I have already found myself browsing ebay for more CED's and I haven't even bought parts for the player yet Smile
