Hello all,
I'm a complete newbie to the CED format. An interesting set of events occurred to cause me to acquire two players and arouund 120 discs all within a week's time.
On a Sunday, I went to the flea market, and spotted a Sears player sitting underneath a few tape decks. The selller had no discs, but said it was last used a few years ago. We made a deal for $15 and I took it home. It turned out to be a 934.54811350, which is a Hitachi model with Stereo A/V outs. It needs belts, so I ordered them from Tom and am awaiting their arrival.
On the following Wednesday, I get a call from a family friend who is going through his father's belongings. He asks if I'm interested in any of the A/V stuff and mentions a Zenith Video Disc player and around 120 discs, no charge. I say "sure!". He'll be dropping them off tomorrow, and I'm quite excited. I see it's the OEM equivalent of the RCA SFT100. It looks like one of the belts is kinda tricky because it's a slightly different size. Hopefully it won't be too bad to work with. It looks like I'll have to order the turntable belt from CEDatum.
If I can get the Zenith going, my friend would be interested in it, and we can split the discs and both have CED setups, which would be cool. I'll let you know how I make out with it.
Right now, I'm really looking forward to the belts for my Sears. I'm hoping they arrive soon so I can get it going.

Welcome, glad to see there is still interest out there. I'm also sitting on 1,000 plus discs I'd like to sell so if there are any particular titles you would like let me know as well. Best of luck with the belts. |

Well, today's the big day. I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Zenith player and discs. He's also throwing in an RCA VCR. I have no idea how old that will be, but am hoping it will be something vintage as well.

Welcome to CEDmagic!!! Let me warn you, this format is very addictive!!! As a matter of personal choice, I'd choose the Zenith player, They are very sweet players, I have had both and I LOVE the Zenith., Whichever one you choose, you will enjoy it! _________________ SGT-250

I changed the belts and got the Sears going. As it turns out, I may not get the Zenith and discs after all. A family member wants them, but has been slow to respond. If they wait long enough, I'll get them. Needless to say, I'm greatly disappointed. That was a heck of a loss.
One question: what is the best way to lubricate the arm track? Every so often it hangs up for a bit. Would lithium grease be appropriate?
So far I've played one of my two movies: On Golden Pond. I hear a slight surface noise in the background, but the picture is good. I actually impressed at how good it looks. _________________ CED Newbie-

I would be interested in Terminator, as well as other 80s action/sci-fi movies. Also, Dirty Harry, if that was released. _________________ CED Newbie-

Hey guys,
I don`t know anything about the vcr other than it's an RCA. Sadly,I may or may not get that as well. This whole deal is getting pretty flakey. I hate when people don't stay true to their word. Really lets me down.

I heard back from the fellow with the Zenith player, RCA VCR, and 120 discs. Turns out the relative didn't want them, so they're mine for the taking again. He's going to come by late Monday or early Tuesday. I'm excited, and will keep you guys up to date. I'll start a new thread with details of the score.

The Sears model you picked up is a model that was produced near the end of the program. Internally it has a much more simple design and is about 50% lighter than the original 350 model. I like the one you have due to the simplicity of it. It is pretty easy to fix and change belts on. They are both the same size belt. The earlier models had 2 different sized belts so it gets confusing. If you take it apart, be very careful. The plastic is 35 years old and it can't be forced very much. The motor that raises and lowers the disc has a small clip that holds the motor in place. That clip will break VERY easily and since this is a very uncommon model, not many parts exist. to fix it you will need to replace the whole bottom of the player, unless you are creative and figure out a way to keep the motor in place. If you break it, I have a fix that I can show you if you break it. Yes, I broke mine changing the belt. |
