I have 2 Sears players (934.54780150 and 934.54810350) for playing stereo discs and 2 Hitachi VIP1000 players for monophonic discs. The 934.54780150 player has the Hitachi STR300 stereo adapter to convert the player to a stereo player. (This is the player that I bought in 1983.)

Backup players are an RCA SJT-200 and a Realistic CED-1 (noisy).

What are your players?

I have but a lowly SFT100 only. Placed a bid on an SJT300 on eBay last week, but it shot up over $400! Was a shame, because it looked brand new.

There is nothing wrong with your player as long as it meets your needs.

You realize that you will need to upgrade your player if you want to use it with an HDTV. The output of the SFT100 is an RF cable and is NTSC. The tuners on all HDTV's (AFAIK) are ATSC and cannot tune to the channel that he SFT100 uses. You will need to get a player with RCA jacks on its back for video and audio. If you are going to use the SFT100 with an SDTV forever, you will be alright.

The main reason I am interested in upgrading is to play my discs with stereo sound. Not sure if the difference between mono and stereo is that noticeable, but I am curious.

Of the playes I have, I would recommend for you the RCA SJT-200 player. The parts for it are readily available as is the stylus. The SJT-090 and 100 models are no better than what you have as far as stereo goes. Parts for the Hitachi chassis players are scarce as hen's teeth. The styli for those players are almost as hard to find. I happen to have an inventory of 7 of the Hitachi styluses so I am set for some time. I also have styli for the RCA players that I bought years ago when they were available.

I cannot give you the stereo separation in dB; but, the sound is quite good. The use of CX noise reduction helps a great deal.

I will keep an eye out for one. Thanks for the recommendation.

Do a search, an SGT 250 in good cosmetic condition but with the caveat they list it as a fixer came up within the last two days.

The 250 is a good basic stereo player.

HDTVs with tuners, even the new 4K models, will tune in Analog channel 3. Some HDTV's have no built-in tuners, analog nor digital. You have to buy them separately. We only got SKT 090 and SJT 100 in the CED lot we bought, but out new Sharp Aquos tunes in analog channel 3 or 4 and the players work fine and look fine on those channels.

I stand corrected. I did not know that some 1080 HDTV's and 4K sets could receive analog signals through their builtin tuners. So much the better. I will have to delve into the manual for my Sony Bravia set to see if it can receive analog signals.

Personally, I do not use the tuners in any of my TV sets. All connections are made using the baseband audio and video which is much friendlier for stereo sound.

My main players are an SJT-400, SGT-200, and a Zenith VP2000. I love them all and can't choose just one.
