Hello all! I'm so glad there's such a wealth of information about CED's online.
I've been searching the forum for information about my problems, but my player has so many that I thought it would be more helpful just to make a post about all of them. It's an RCA STK 400 - cosmetically in great shape. First off, it doesn't always pull the disc out of the sleeve - it'll pull it in just fine but spit out the whole cartridge. It will sometimes accept a disc after I fiddle with the clips that grab the caddy.
It gets worse, though. If it does decide to take a disc, it spins up just fine - but the turntable wobbles and makes loud, rhythmic grinding noises. Lastly, the image is nearly all white, has grey lateral bands, and seems to have trouble resolving colors - completely unwatchable.
Based on my research, I've probably got an unbalanced table and some kind of screwed-up cartridge. Is it worth attempting to fix (I'm not particularly skilled at electronics repair), or would it be better to give it away for parts? I've got 9 movies to go with it as well. I know the J/K 400's are desirable and I don't want it to get thrown away.
Thanks for your help. |

We are new too, my husband and I, and got over 1,000 discs at estate sale, but no stereo player. Just an SJT 90 and 100. The 100 has issues though. My husband, the mechanically inclined one of the family, says it sounds like your player could be made to work easier than our SJT 100 that has issues, so would you be interested in selling it to us? We sure would like to get a stereo model, and of course, we'd pay shipping. Thanks! |

if the turntable is grinding then it is too low. the turntable spindle rides on a tiny thrust washer thats about the diameter of a pencil eraser and about as thick as a dime sometimes if the player is handled improperly the thrust washer can fall out and drop the turn table probably just enough for the stylus to just read the disc and cause the visual playback issue _________________ (2)Sears 274 & 934(80150,10&11350), sft100, sgt250, sjt 090-400, vp550, VDR3000, VP2000 & 4000

also i forgot to mention that if the caddy is rejected with the disc the pinch rollers may be just dirty. you can clean them with alcohol i think. sometimes they are too slippery to fully pull the caddy into the lock defeat tabs _________________ (2)Sears 274 & 934(80150,10&11350), sft100, sgt250, sjt 090-400, vp550, VDR3000, VP2000 & 4000
