You might have recently seen this sealed copy of the CED holy grail up on ebay. I was the buyer. Here it is, friends:

The three ripples there, is just the plastic ziplock, not the factory seal below. I've noticed over time, all wrinkles like these, leave completely from the ziplocks.

I know many will want to know, so I'll tell you; I payed $$268.29 for the privilege and the honor to be it's new steward.

It came from central Indiana. I asked the owner if he worked for RCA and he explained how this was his late dads. He said he didn't remember him working for RCA but told me, he probably knew someone who did and this is how it might have been given to his dad.

A copy of one of the very last discs created by RCA. A sealed copy, no less.

If you look closely, you can notice the seal is split open on the right (from the view of the front of the disc) and some dust has gathered along this opening over the years. I was able to use a dry q-tip and remove the majority of the dust on this side.
However, some dust has gathered on the left side also, but the seal is not broken apart on that side. To remove this, I think I'll buy some extra long q-tips to reach across and attempt to remove some. If it places pressure on the seal, I'll abort and just leave it leave it there. It came right out very easy from the right hand side with just a couple light swaths. Now of course being inside the bag, no more dust can get onto the disc.

I realized I had the wrong settings entered in my photo resizer. I fixed them to be larger.

For those who haven't read about this disc, you can read Tom's article here:
https://www.cedmagic.com/mem/memories-of-videodisc.html

I had read that a year or more ago now, and figured I'd never see one and didn't think much of it. I didn't even plan to add it to my collection even if one came up one day. When it came up on ebay, I looked right over it, after a couple hours of it being up. I just kinda glanced over it, thinking it was an old black and white movie.

Then for whatever reason, it finally caught my eye and I read it. I put an offer in, no response. I'd learn latter the seller wasn't able to get back to folks offers and he had told me he had gotten a lot.

Anyway, I figured I'd sleep on it. After all, if it sold, I wouldn't be too down about it, seeing that I never had planned to actually get a copy anyway.

I then re-read the article for a refresher and then search to see what someone payed for one on here. Looks like someone else payed a couple hundred for a sealed copy about a decade ago, so I figured, well with inflation, that's about his current asking price.

Then I thought, well, if I don't someones going to buy it for that price before too long. It had been up nearly 24 hrs now, so I knew time was ticking.

Then it dawned on me, should I have any regrets, I'm sure I could pass it on to another collector and recoup or near recoup at least what I payed, so I just went ahead and bought it.

I've got no regrets but I know I would have, had I not bought it. This is how I come to buy the most expensive CED in my collection.

That would of course devalue this item as a collectable greatly.

There would be no reason to do this, as it's on youtube where it can be viewed now by anyone who wants.

This is history and deserves to remain as a seal copy of course. The next steward will be grateful.

An unsealed copy sells today for $316.50 USD.
$48.21 more than my sealed copy from a year ago.
This is a very good indicator that you better save up and prepare a fund devoted for it, so you don't miss out the next time one comes up. They'll likely only go up in price from here. Probably the only time these sell is when someone dies or they get very hard up and have to sell. They're not one you really want to part with, if you're one of the fortunate ones to have gotten your hands on one. I know I don't have any plans of parting with my copy anytime soon. The odds of getting two in a lifetime are pretty slim. Once you trade a copy, the odds are, that will be the only copy you'll ever have so think long and hard before parting with one. If you want one, start thinking long and hard now at what your willing to pay so you can get a devoted account fully funded for a copy the next time one comes up.
Looks like there were 4 bidders. 3 are feeling pretty dang beat up today for letting a copy get by them. 1 is grinning ear to ear. I know because I've been there. Very Happy

If you are considering trading one, this is also a good indicator that letting them go to auction may be better (though more risk) than selling them as buy it now.
My sealed copy from dec.2022 was listed as a buy it now. It was probably a good thing I didn't hesitate for more than overnight at the price then.

Not sure if anyone saw but another sealed copy of this just sold for $316 on eBay. I would have to say, of all the rare discs, for some reason this one seems to be the most common. Which is odd to me since they were only given to employees. John Stevens said that he guessed there was around 400 of these pressed. But in the 10 years that I have been collecting I know I've seen close to two dozen of them if not more, with almost half that being sealed still. Most employees just saved it as a memento and never watched it so a lot of them are still sealed, or were opened by the next owner. I own Pam's copy and Gunter John's sealed copy. I've owned around 3 or 4 more that have moved on to other collectors, most from eBay before prices started getting crazy. I don't think I've paid more than $40 for one (and I know I haven't charged more than $100 for one). And it's one of those discs that's great to have in the collection, but at this point it's been digitized and is free to watch on YouTube, download it to a DVD and save it. Thanks for keeping the magic alive!

It wasn't sealed. It appears to be in excellent condition though.

Next time you to want to let one go for $100 hit me up. Very Happy
Those days are long gone, like back in the 80's when you could buy, now highly coveted classic muscle cars because they were just "20 year old, used cars" back then. My folks were very poor back then but they had a '68 dodge charger as their daily driver, for example. Mom wrapped it around an electric pole, driving it in the snow. Why not? Because back then, it was just an old used car.

RCA is long gone and CED's are too. When you get more than 400 collectors, and everyone wants one for their collections, the prices are going to go up for them. Just like the '68 charger, you can't go buy a new one anymore. What were built and not crashed or rotted out, is all there is.

Collectors set the price with all things collected. Supply and demand.
The fact you can buy something where only 400 were believed to be made for just a few hundred will probably one day sound cheap to future collectors.

20 years from now, CED collectors will view this and wish they could time travel and buy them for just a few hundred, just like car guys wish they could go back and buy, or rebuy their favorite muscle car from the golden era of the late 60's early 70's for just a few grand, rather than the upwards of triple digits some examples go for today.

For as long as the link remains, the sale for that one can be viewed here:

That's very true. We are already seeing that with Stylus. Not more than 3 or 4 years ago John used to rebuild them, you could get one for $30 to $40. But now they can't be rebuilt and all that exists today is all there will ever be. So now we are seeing prices from $150 on up. As they become more rare they will be more and more expensive. It won't be long before they will be in excess of $1,000.
