If that makes sense. Is there a way to tell if a cartridge has been re-built as opposed to being the way it was when it left the factory. I removed one from a player to check it and it appeared what I would think of brand new. There was no debris on the stylus what-so-ever. Kind of looked like it was just removed from the box and placed into the player but never used?? |

What I do is assume that a stylus is original (i.e. not rebuilt) when I receive it whether it is from E-bay or in a player. If I send a cartridge to cedatum.com, I print their report about it and store the report with the cartridge for future reference. In this way, I have a record of its history. _________________ Sears 934.54780150 & 934.54810350

If it has been rebuilt by CEDatum he will put initials of the owner and a number for which cartridge it is that he has worked on by that individual. So for example if my name is John Doe, and it's the first cartridge i've sent him, he will write JD1 right on the cartridge/stylus. The next one I send it will be labeled JD2, and so on. John keeps records of all the ones he has worked on and what he did to them. So if you get a player and the stylus has TF1, RG25, JG8, etc. You can email John at CEDatum and he will tell you if it was just cleaned and what grade it got or if it was rebuilt and what grade it got, and when too.
But if it wasn't rebuilt by CEDatum, don't know who else would, then there is no way of knowing if it was or not. |

I have the very first Hitachi stylus that CEDatum ever rebuilt. He did not charge me because it was more or less a prototype. It was very successful and I still have it to this day. The one thing that is different is the color of the stylus mount is white. The original Hitachi stylus mount is orange. The picture quality that this stylus delivers is exceptional. So if you have a bad stylus, please, do not toss it out. Send it to CEDatum for a rebuild and you will not be disappointed. |

CEDatum.com is the only place I know of that cleans or rebuilds any CED styluses.
I bought a new Hitachi stylus off Sears in 1987 after the news came out that the CED video format was discontinued. It cost me $90 (which was a shock to me). I received the cartridge in a padded envelope postmarked 4/21/87 that I still have.. I bought the stylus for my Sears 934.54780150 player in case the original stylus was thinking of failing. Well, it did not and it is still going stong. _________________ Sears 934.54780150 & 934.54810350

I know what you mean about technical info for the Hitachi players as there seems to be none. A few months ago, I posted the service manual for the RCA SJt-100/101/200/300 players on the lddb.com forum thus making it available to anyone. It would be good if someone on this forum would scan similar documents for the Hitachi player(s) so they could be posted. Such a post would be immensely helpful for those of us attempting to repair non-functioning players.
Personally, I have 2 working Hitachi chassis players: a 934.54780150 and a 934.54810350. I also have a Realistic CED-1 i am repairing and a non-functioning 934.50780150 player in storage.. _________________ Sears 934.54780150 & 934.54810350

Of the CED stylus cartridges CEDatum receives for evaluation and restoration, 30% need diamond tip cleaning, 40% repairs and 30% are rebuilt with a new diamond tip.
A high percentage of the repairs are for replacement of the fly-lead. The lead has broken, collapsed or sagged.
The final year of RCA stylus production was 1985 so ALL stylus carts are now 30+ years old. A.C. |
