To add a note to 'New to CED. Just ordered one. Some intro questions'.

RCA shipped new players with a clever design of Shipping Tab. A pin that is inserted into the player stylus arm to lock it, and a metal tab to twist and remove the pin.
Instructions in the player Owners Manual detail how the tabs should be removed. But who reads the Owners Manual ?
CEDatum has had players in to repair that won't make a picture. The new owner had removed the shipping tab by breaking it off. This leaves the pins still in place so the stylus arm is locked and cannot advance to play the disc.
The CEDatum shipping screw kit has a screw to fit the pin hole and a flexible tab with a Warning Label - to remove before operating player.

wow, the factory tabs are metal, someone broke them off in a player? all the shipping locks i have, have an arrow and instructions right on them...

I have 2 of the original tabs and they are indeed hard metal. Both have the same instructions on a red tag:

BEFORE USE
-----------------
Remove this metal shipping
tab. TURN LEFT AND
PULL DOWN.

it is hard to believe that someone could break them off.

CED players are now 30 years old. The glue on the cardboard tab can let go and the tab with instructions falls off . The metal part comes off with a swift pull with pliers,
The usual damage to a J/K player if the stylus arm is not secured during shipment is that the third reduction gear breaks, This gear is not difficult to replace,
