What are the physical differences in the PAL and NSTC players / discs that restrict the ability to play NTSC discs on a PAL machine and PAL on a NTSC machine.

I understand that they spin at a different RPM and that the video signals are encoded different but other than that is their any physical difference in the hardware?

If for example the motor in a PAL player was modified to spin at the slower 450rpm of an NTSC disc would it play?

Has anyone ever tired this?

I'd need to see a PAL player service manual, but I suspect the video FM modulation frequency is different.

In addition the color subcarrier is remodulated, and that is also likely different for PAL CED as well.

Since the mechanisms are very similar, a conversion is non-trivial but possible given service manuals, but making a mod so that you could switch between PAL and NTSC would be harder.

OT1: One of JVC's improvements in making VHD was including the flexible remodulation circuits so that all players could play NTSC or PAL disks. And then it never got widely released outside Japan...

OT2: On the LD side, most of the combo PAL/NTSC players are garbage - most subject the NTSC video to horrible comb filter etc processing, and the CLD-D925 which doesn't has other severe PQ flaws, and the PAL/NTSC DVL's are too expensive for the people who would figure out if those were any better to get one.)

OT3: The in-flight safety videos on the 707-like space planes used to deliver thetans to Earth were on a system basically identical to TED. (/scientology joke)

Aren't the audio and video carriers flipped in PAL vs NTSC?
