I found an SJT 300 locally for $125, and it works and seems to play fine. The seller is an antique a/v dealer and seems great.

This is my first player purchase and was wondering if this sounds okay? Are there things I should ask or know about this model? It comes with an Earth Wind and Fire disc, I dunno?

Thanks for any help!

It is worth it if it plays correctly! Make sure all buttons work and actually do what they are supposed to do, rewind, pause, etc.. I would sell one on ebay for around $225 with the remote and a new stylus installed w/o shipping.

No shipping costs for you either!

Thanks for letting me know. I will double check everything. Unfortunately, I don't think it has a remote.

I have purchased a few CED's and have been itching to play them!

Thanks again Very Happy

No problem! Remotes can be found for $20 or less on ebay and you can find old rca remotes and use the kit on here to make them work with the ced player!

So I picked up the player and got it home, and it loads and spins up okay. However, it never plays, just displays the double dashes, or 'P' when I hit the play/pause button. The dealer I got it from had me bring it in today and look it over. He was super helpful and offered to refund my money after trying a couple of things.

After reading some of the troubleshooting FAQs, it says the stylus could be the culprit. Now if I get the stylus checked out and repaired/replaced, correct me if I am wrong, I will still be ahead of buying a working player plus whatever it would have cost me to have it shipped? That is assuming it is only the stylus.

I emailed CEDatum and am waiting to hear from them. Fingers crossed!

My SFT 100W did the same thing and the issue was the stylus, mine was totaled and I think ran about $30 to repair. The stylus would not advance or anything until I had it rebuilt. If it were me I would repair the stylus and see what that does. Assuming it was cheap enough and the rest seems to be working fine I would repair it. Look at the stylus and see if the little copper wire is still connected, the issue with mine was that is was broken and was not making connection. I was told that the symptoms I was having (same as yours) were due to the stylus not making a complete circuit.

That's good to hear. I hope to mail out the stylus tomorrow. I just really want to see and hear a movie live for myself, just a tad excited is all!

The folks at CEDatum are awesome! I had a great experience with them. I had another issue with my player (FM demodulator chip was bad) they got me the new part and I installed it using their advice and my player works like a charm. We are lucky to have a group who can still repair styluses and get other parts.

It is a super service! I've seen used record player needle cartridges cost more, and the players themselves have little to no support. Maybe it helps that RCA used pretty universal stuff and that the number of manufacturers is relatively small. Whatever the reason, I am super happy that I found this format, and especially this site and group! Very Happy

I just got my stylus back, and picked up a caddy belt too. CEDatum rated the stylus an A- after cleaning. What an absolutely SUPER service!

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Now the player loads and plays. The sound is great, the picture is pretty fuzzy and skippy. Will the picture improve with play as the stylus sweeps the disc multiple times? Will this vary from disc to disc? Any suggestions on how to help it improve? Is there anything I should NOT do or be aware of during this period?

Thanks for everything, you guys have been super helpful! Thanks also to ketonic_dude for getting me in contact with a great seller locally.

Check stylus height! http://www.cedmagic.com/tech-info/repair-solutions.html#dragging-turntable

It can make the picture fuzzy without hearing a rubbing sound so its something to check! Sometimes turntable can be too high up or the actual turntable can slip down the shaft and might have to be readjusted. I can send pics or explain it better after you check the tt height in the guide above!

YIKES! I went from sound with sketchy picture to nothing, and may have lost my reference point. Could you send me pics or suggestions. Hopefully I didn't butterfinger this thing to badly. Shocked Laughing

Just turn the height adjustment the other way till you hear a lil bit of rubbing again. then do quarter turns until there is no sound. Then do one more quarter turn! You cant do damage really unless you hulk something. If it doesn't come back it was more than the stylus. Try that and then if it doesn't come back, You might have to take tt out and do an adjustment on the shaft.

Hey Mayor West, thanks for the name drop, I knew Guy would take care of you. I'll actually be heading up that way tomorrow and plan to stop by his shop. He never got back to me weather he would be around but what they hey. I'm glad you got a stereo model. I have tons of players to sell or get rid of but they are all mono. These players can be fickle beasts. I know I've taken a couple apart to fix one thing and then adjust another thinking it will improve it only to have to spend the next several hours or days getting it back to where it was to begin with. But it's all part of the fun I suppose. I do have some discs left if your looking for some more and I find more all the time. Just gotta keep an eye open. Glad to have you with us.

Thanks k-dude! I am hoping that I can get this dialed in correctly. It was getting picture and sound before I futzed with the turn table, so hopefully that means I am not past all hope. Just need to fine tune it more.

Maybe I could buy one of your players and have a known good player to evaluate the discs that I have or pick up? That would be pretty helpful.

Also I see some people post a 'wants' list, maybe I'll get one of those going.

I'm sure it just needs some tinkering and it will be good to go again. Pretty sure I've got a SJT 090 or 100 laying around I could get up and running if you wanted to buy one of them. I'd prefer if you picked it up so I wouldn't have to deal with trying to ship it. Get that want list made up too and I might be able to help you out with some, or your welcome to come browse. I'm sure I've gotta have something you'll want, or 50. lol

That sounds great. Please put a hold on one of your players and I'll get to making a list. I keep coming across stuff thinking how great that would be to have, now just to put it all down somewhere.

I hope to get back to fine tuning the player I bought by this weekend.

Thanks for everything.

Finally!!!! With Josh's terrific help, and a known good stylus (also Josh's), my player works beautifully! I am so over the moon happy and amazed at the picture and sound quality, I truly can't thank Josh enough!

Not only did he give me his time and expertise, he sent me home with a working stylus and 5 crates of wonderful titles to help start my collection!

i assume that means you dont live in rhode island? lol nice! i should have stated earlier that typically in turntable height adjustment, 1/2 turn in either direction is typical to start with when adjusting turntable height without a height gauge and a test disc ( junk disc )

Josh id good people, I'm glad you got the benefit of his expertise. I know he prolly told you to be careful what discs you put in your player. I was watching Diary of Anne Frank a couple of years ago, it was playing fine, and the picture went blank and made an awful noise, I was sure it broke the stylus. I sent it to John @ CEDmagic, he sent it back with a shock, he said it had some kind of red goo on it, that we never figured out what it was. I was thinking maybe it had been a rental, and someone wrote on it with a red crayon. who knows. Anyway, if you have any doubt, pull it out and check it.

Seems like it was more a stylus issue than anything else. We tried the one I had in one of Josh's players as well, and it still didn't work. I can see where the benefit of multiple players comes in handy (my wife won't, but I do.) Very Happy

I was going to have CEDatum check it again. I'll be sure to be watchful on what I play, plus, Josh wouldn't let me take any suspect discs, good thing that.

Thanks all for the helpful advice, if I can ever return the favor, look me up!

It was a good time Mayor, as you can probably guess I don't get to hang out with other CED folk much. lol. I'm glad you are enjoying the player and if you ever want a backup player I have a few (the wife doesn't need to know, lol). But yeah as Scott said, and as I stated when you were over, it's always a good idea to pop the disc out and inspect it before play. First off to see if it's cracked cause that can be a nightmare. Also to make sure it's not scratched to all hell or have dirt or gunk on it. I had a Friday the 13th disc that someone had spilled pop on, coke I'm guessing. I couldn't even get the spine out without a pair of pliers and then the disc was covered in sticky good. Would have certainly messed up a needle. I rinsed it with water several times to loosen up and remove most of the pop stuck on and used soapy water to clean out the caddy. Got it all back to working condition and it played pretty good. Anywho, thanks for the visit and I hope you come back for more discs someday. Wink

PS. Here is the remote you are looking for. The listing has already ended for this one but just keep a look out.
