Thirty years ago, I would look at the ads for 'Star Trek: The Menagerie' on video disc in magazines like Starlog and Fantastic Films. I desperately wanted that, but I could never afford them, like so many other neat things that were coming out back then.
Now, in middle age, I've managed to FINALLY get so many of the things I used to long after-- all kinds of video game systems, old 8-bit computers, an oscilloscope, laserdisc player, and, a week or two ago, I walked into a thrift store and found a Zenith VP2000 for $2.98.
But no discs!
When I got home I immediately ordered one from Ebay-- The Menagerie, naturally. I sat for days waiting for it to arrive, but before it did, I stopped at a local Goodwill after a school event with my son and found 14 discs for $1 ea. Yay!
A Man for All Seasons
2001 (2)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Close Encounters (2)
Doctor Zhivago (2)
Swiss Family Robinson
Fiddler on the Roof (2)
High Road to China
and disc each of Star Trek:The Motion Picture and Apocalypse Now (at least I can watch the ends, lol).
In short, the VP2000 works. A little buggy, and I already converted it over to composite video, but I'm happy happy happy with a wonderful piece of vintage technology and the fulfillment of another item off my adolescent bucket list.

Yes, I'd like to see that too, and know how you did your conversion. Last summer I did a VP 2000 conversion to stereo AV outputs, and that went to a fellow collector here, but now I forgot who it was.
The VP 2000 has that unique design that's pretty nice. |
