Just registered a few minutes ago, figured this would be the best place for self-introduction ...

I only knew of CEDs beginning about a week or so ago, when I was doing some research about possibly selling what I thought were laserdiscs over eBay, and then come to find out they're not laserdiscs, they're CEDs. Being a fan of older technology, I started looking up more information on them, and eventually wound up here and decided to register.

Forgive me, I'm a newbie to the whole thing, but wouldn't mind discussing stuff related to it.

Hey there!!!! Welcome to CEDmagic!!! It is ALWAYS good to see new people interested in this little format. I was introduced to Capacitance Electronic Disc Players (CED) and the movies.
I'm sure you have made yourself familiar enough to know this format uses a stylus (like a needle in an old record player) and the caddy is designed to keep you from ever having to touch the disc. There are somewhere around 1700 titles, and some of the guys here have the entire library! Some are vigorously getting there! The last player manufactured was in 1984, it was the RCA Selectavision Videodisc Player SJT-400 or SKT-400, there were some that were about to be mass produced when RCA pulled the plug, so the 400 were the last manufactured player. If you go on EBAY and type in CEDs there are usually about 3 or 4 thousand for sale at any given time. There are plenty of people on this site that can answer any question you might have. Let me warn you now, if you start this hobby, it is addictive!!!!!!!

Let us know when you are ready for a player. Several of us here have players that are in very good shape or reconditioned and much less risky than an ebay purchase if you buy from a member here.

Hey, you are off to a great start. One of the things you need to be watchful of, is since our players have a stylus, there is direct contact from your player to the disc. If the disc hasn't been handled well, you could do some damage to your stylus. Fortunately, we have a Company, (CEDatum) who rebuilds, and cleans the stylus. So, if you buy them off of Ebay or a place like that, I would stay away from people who say "untested" or they can't test them because they no longer have, or never had a player. Now everyone who collects these movies, has bought the "untested" ones, and all we have to go by is the condition of the outside of the disc itself. You can find discs with Rental sticker on them, if I were you, i'd pass on them. Some people collect them just to get the cover, and they never intend to watch them, but I love to watch them, it brings back such great memories!!
