My SJT 200 was playing fine last night. I played a full movie and it worked with no problems. This morning I was going through my discs and was checking out a copy of Mysterious Island. The disc would not play. After some investigation I realized it was a empty housing with no movie in the carrier.
Tried the next movie (which did have a movie in the carrier) and it would not play. I took to top of the machine off to see what was happening. The disc load, it drops down on the turntable, it spins, the stylus moves into position, but it does not actually play. In the indicator on the front panel there are just two dashes - - . It will eject and reload, but can't get the disc to actually play.
Wondering if inserting the empty carriage somehow caused the problem? Any thoughts on how I can troubleshoot the situation?
Thanks

OK, I've posted a video on youtube showing what its not doing. The video quality is poor, but hopefully it will help show the problem.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A72bNtOyFdw

When I turn on the player the L light appears.
It loads fine.
Disc drops to platter and spins
Stylus moves to position, but does not play
Double dash -- appears in the window on the front of the player
If I press Reject the disc raises properly into place for unloading and the UL light comes on

So, it appears that the stylus is not engaging with the disc once it moves into position. As I mentioned, this started after I loaded an empty carriage into the player. I don't know if that has any connection with the problem or is just coincidental.

Try a few other discs and see if it stays the same.

If so, I would initially suspect a stylus problem, your stylus may have gotten dirty or damaged. If you have another stylus, you may have to install it and see.

Fortunately, Cedatum can clean or rebuild your stylus at a good price.

Yes, I have tried multiple discs and the symptom is the same with every disc. I do have a spare stylus, so I'll do a little homework and try to recall how I get access to replace the stylus and give that a try.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Turns out I don't have an extra stylus for this player. It's my Sears player that I have the extra stylus for.
If this is my only option I may need to send my stylus in for repair or purchase another one unless anyone has any other things I can check first.

You don't happen to have access to another SJT or SKT player perhaps? If you do, you can take your stylus and put it in that other player to see if it is still good. That may help you to decide your next move.

Wish I did, but the Sears is my only other player.

Then I think you either buy another one or send yours to the folks at Cedatum.com for inspection. When you take it out, you can look to see if the thin wire lead to the tip came loose too.

Personally, because I like to watch CEDs not just collect, I have concentrated on only having RCA SJT & SKT models. I sold all of my Sears/Hitachi players. You might consider selling yours and purchasing another SJT or SKT player with good stylus you can use for testing, as that would be almost the same as just buying a stylus. I have SJT 90 and 100 models with original boxes not too expensive, or you can find one on ebay too.

Having an extra RCA player would be a great idea. Sorry now I sold off some of my extras years ago. If I go that route I'd prefer to stay with a stereo player because I'm afraid I'd end up with the only one working being the SJT 90 or 100.
Is there a particular reason you like the RCA's vs the Hitachi/Sears models?

You can still find parts or suitable replacement parts for the rca sj/k players. Near impossible with hitachi style players now. Cedatum will not work on hitachi style players either but can fix literally any problem in the rca sj/k players. I'm with rick on rca players. Easier to fix, easier to find parts, plus I think they look better!

Good reasoning. Makes sense. Although, I must admit, I've never sought out a particular player. All the players I've come across have been from thrift store finds. I believe all but two of those were various RCA models.
However, if I do seek out an additional player I'll definitely go with an RCA. Hopefully, a model with a remote this next time around.

Then sell your Hitachi and get either an SJT/SKT 200 or 400 player. Both are remote capable.
