|

While servicing my Sears disc player I noticed that when I played a movie in it to test it out (with the outer cover off) I could see the disc fluttering a little bit near the outer edge because it wasn't fully flat. I realize there is always going to be this but I was wondering how much warpage is ok and when is it time to toss the movie out? Or can it be laid flat (outside the caddy of course) and could I put some heavy books on it for a week in an attempt to straighten it out?
Thanks , Kit |

DON'T...you have some really messy coating on that disc that
1. gets all OVER things
2. The reason they are in the caddies is to prevent fingerprints and contamination. You are probably going to damage the disc doing that and these are like a phonograph record but instead of going back and forth in a groove the stylus rides the top (hence the coating is like a lubricant).
I believe there is some information on the subject on the main CED Magic site but many of these titles are fairly easy to locate still and you can find many here for sale as well as those on eBay.
If you watch another disc like that you may find another cause, unless you've actually taken it out of the caddy and looked it over, but touching it isn't a thing a novice might want to really do as unlike optically read laserdiscs and CD/DVDs they are somewhat fragile being like a record.
Also know that CEDs are best stored VERTICALLY. Stacking them for long periods of time will put too much weight on the and damage them and, like LPs, heat is a killer. |
