CED repair solutions basically show that a bad stylus results in a quick skip through the disc or the disc just not playing as stated here:

http://www.cedmagic.com/tech-info/repair-solutions.html#worn-out-stylus-tip

I encountered two other situations from bad or dirty stylus:

1. Consistent replaying of the same scene over and then occassional skipping. This was caused by a bent SFT/SGT stylus arm which was corrected by a gentle rebending to make the stylus sit straight in the player.

2. This one had me for a while: SJT 300, the disc would play until it reached about 40 mins in, then the stylus would not track any longer. Also, the scan modes were slower than normal. I first thought it was the disc. Tried a good disc and the same problem. Then I thought there was a problem with the stylus arm, like an obstruction. There was none. On a hunch due to the slower than normal scan time, I tried a known good stylus, and that was all it needed.

Anyone else have an unusual symptom like this just from a bad or dirty stylus?

I always make sure all function buttons work with any stylus I put in any player I sell or use. I cant tell you the headaches I had until I figured out bad styli (meaning good tip, but out of adjustment , bad) won't search correctly. It could work great in rapid access forward, reverse and say the search forward works but the search reverse just stutters over the same spot not moving almost looking like page mode. I've even had a stylus work great except it would never set back down after pausing but every other function worked amazing! No matter the disc or player it would always come down to the stylus being "bad". Off to cedatum they go and when they get back all functions work great again!

Here is something I discovered a long time ago. Take the cartridge and turn it so the stylus is facing down. Now release the spring that holds the stylus up in the cartridge body. In a free state the stylus must hang straight down. If it hangs to one side or the other the visual search will only work correctly in one direction depending on which way it is off. If it is off to far the player will not start or it will take off in fast forward because the tracking arm is constantly trying to put the stylus in a neutral or middle state. You can adjust this with the ball the fly lead is attached to by rotating it left or right. there is a square hole on the oppisite side of the ball so you can insert a tool to rotate the ball. This will not work on the SJT or SKT series of cartridges because the fly lead is rivited to the cartridge body. It works on all other cartridges including all Hitachi brands of cartridges.
