| Hello all. I am knew to this group and new to CEDs as well. I purchased my first CED player a few months ago at a thrift shop for 5.99 and it worked fine. I just purchased an SJT-090 at a yard sale today for $3.00. It plays great, just one problem. One of the gears is missing which is part of the system to load and unload the discs. I had to take the cover off and manually spin the gears in order to load the disc. Once loaded, it played beautifully, much better than the other player I purchased. I think this one has a really good stylus. Anyway, the missing gear is the small one attached to the motor which moves the other gears. Was wondering if anyone knew the specifications (diameter and number of teeth) and where I might find one. I found a gear site on the web that will make them custom, but would rather have an original if possible. Hope someone can help. Thanks. |

| I just realized it's not a gear I need but a belt. It seems that the black goo used to be a belt. I learned this from another post I just read. If anyone has any ideas on which belt I need and where I might find it, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. |

You can buy the correct belts from Tom here:
http://www.cedmagic.com/home/purchase.html
In a pinch or while waiting for the belt, you can use an o-ring from an auto parts supply or hardware store of this size:
O-ring width of 3/32 inch and inside diameter of 1 3/16 inch, outside diameter of 1 3/8 inch. This size o-ring is just right to sit in the pulley and catch both sides of the V-groove nicely, and not be too tight & bind up nor too loose & slip.
I have been using an O-ring of this size as a test on an SJT 200 for over a year now with perfect results. |

Getting the black sticky goo of the pulley and gears.
RCA Service Company used household Ammonia. Window Cleaner with Ammonia also works and is easier to work with.
First remove most of the black goo from the pulley with a tooth pick. Then place the pulley and gears in a container and cover them with the ammonia or window cleaner. In a few minutes the goo will be dissolved. The ammonia will also clean any black goo from your fingers.

Hey, Daxi Don, are you the member who has had success in cleaning dirty discs?
I have the set of 4 Holocaust CEDs, and one of them was dropped in a muddy puddle, it looks like. I haven't done anything to clean it to datew so I have not watched this miniseries yet. Any suggestions? |

The CED disc surface has a thin layer of permanent oil on it. If the oil is removed by a cleaning process expect severe stylus wear and scrapeing of the disc surface.
Use only distilled water to clean a disc. Make an adaptor to spin the disc ( an electric drill works) and spray the disc surface with distilled water from a spray bottle. Work from the inside of the disc to the outside. The water and dirt will migrate to the outside of the disc and spin off. Allow the disc to air dry. |

I know about the thin layer of silicone lubricant. Does your process leave it fairly intact?
I'm thinking about using a non-working SJT player to do this. In other words, the player spins up but isn't working or useful otherwise. It will be interesting to see how well this does in getting the diort off. |

| On the videodisc production line, RCA used DI Water ( de-ionized water) to clean the disc. Distilled water is as pure as DI water and can be used to clean a disc. |
