It's not quite as easy as that.

I would start by going to CEDMagic and looking at the rarity ratings - how common/uncommon a particular title is. This is someting to consider, but really only has a major impact when you get into the highly unusual titles. There were no bidding wars when I got my "Very Rare" discs off eBay, although this will probably happen for something odd like the Stereo Alignment disc, etc. (I only escaped with my alignment disc for about $8 because the seller listed it as a "video disck" with no mention of Selectavision or CED - always check alternate spellings, folks)

Then factor in the condition - not just the caddy and artwork, but the actual disc itself. Scratched? Seemingly fine? Sealed?

In my travels, I have never paid more than $4 for a title from a shop that didn't really know what it was (Goodwill, etc.) I have also paid no more than $5 for titles from dealers who knew (or thought they knew) what it was. I will never go higher than $10 for a title on eBay, because there will be another copy right behind it, and there are collectors liquidating their collections all the time.

In my opinion, only the ones listed as "Extremely Rare" on CEDMagic have any truly noteworthy monetary value.

Jim

p.s. Tom: Have you seen <www.lddb.com>? A LaserDisc database (35,000 catalogued and counting!), but also allows users to maintain their own database of what is in their collection. This kind of thing would be invaluable to the CED community, as well as providing an updated look at rarity ratings for titles. Perhaps someone (hint hint) could talk to lddb.com about their interface and figure out how we could inplement it?
