I have been here over a year and a half, I wonder how are we doing in here? A question for the guys who have been here for a few years. How has the interest level now? I know I lurked in here for some time before I actually started posting. I have looked back and, a few years ago, there were a lot of people active in here, then it seemed to die off to almost nothing. How would you rate today versus some of the days before, say as early as 2007 or before. _________________ 1000 titles

I find that like many forums that focus on niche interests the activity level has peaks and valleys. There were some lively discussions back when Tom first put the board in place, and then it did indeed quiet down considerably only to resurge again later. Comes and goes.
Many of the old regulars have cycled out over time. Most of the users I've encountered here have a few pet projects and hobbies running simultaneously that also peak and valley in how much attention they demand. I can only speak for myself, but there are periods when I'm looking at different things and stopping by here falls by the wayside.
I believe another pattern is dictated by tech help. A "generation" of users sees new questions and answers for tech problems, or remembers seeing them in a recent thread, and there is less chatter as the board shifts slightly from a forum to a knowledgebase. Then as the threads fade away into the archives in favor of more casual conversations, new users post similar questions as old threads and the activity starts up again. Cyclical.
Beyond that, there was a bit more tech-head debate and discussion back then. Still resurfaces a little bit, but there are some fun old ones if you dig around a while.
One new development is all the open-ended threads (last CED watched, change-a-letter, etc). These keep the board more occupied-looking than it was in the past, though admittedly they aren't my cup of tea. But if they keep the community buzzing, great! |
