Today is Wednesday, 4 April, 2012
It was exactly 28 years ago today, on Wednesday, 4 April, 1984, when RCA Corporation made the sad announcement about the discontinuance of CED player production. It must have been overwhelming to all of the people in Indiana who devoted all of their time & hard work in to a good product.
The reason I mention these events today is because another hobby I have is studying calendars, which I know a lot about. Every 28 years, calendar days repeat in the exact same pattern for every day, so the day of this event of is exactly identical to today.
One more question, if any one knows: Were the other CED players, which were made in Japan by Hitachi, Sanyo, and Toshiba, also discontinued on Wednesday, 4 April, 1984, as well as RCA CED players? Did stores still continue to sell them, or did they stop being sold some time before or after then? |

Studying calendars, interesting, I've never heard of anyone who does this.
Here's what it says here...

How many CED players were manufactured over what time span?
Players were manufactured from late 1980 (in preparation for the Spring 1981 introduction of the CED system) until shortly after RCA's abandonment of the system in April 1984. A total of about 750,000 CED players were made (550,000 units from RCA and 200,000 units from all other manufacturers). _________________ The Reason A Dog Has So Many Friends, He Wags His Tail Instead Of His Tongue. |

Of course discs would continue to be produced for another 2 years, the last ones made in June 1986 (last regular title was Jewel of the Nile, very last was Memories of Videodisc.) _________________ Videodisc and stereo sound- there's no better value around! |
