I don't know if anyone here watches Community on NBC, but incase you don't I thought you'd all like to know that they actually mentioned CEDs in an episode last night. Chevy Chase's character Pierce, who is the oldest member of the study group on the show, has very little understanding of modern technology on the show.

In the clip, the study group have all just come back from Christmas Break, and when asked what he got up to, Pierce told everyone "I digitized my entire movie collection. Goodbye VHS, hello Selectavision CED Videodisc"

It's always nice to hear a shout out to an old video technology that isn't Laserdisc or Beta.

Anyways, here's the clip

I quit watching network TV ever since they started keeping their logos on the screen all the time. It's so nice of them to also move the logos on the HD broadcasts towards the middle of the screen, so if you happen to be watching it cropped on a 4x3 TV the logo won't be cut off.

I'll have to watch this on Hulu if it's there, but anyone who currently works in the TV industry is a sell-out. I would not even allow a stupid dog video or something like that shot by me to be shown on "America's Funniest Home Videos" defaced by the ABC logo, so I don't know why people put their lives into producing shows only to have them ruined like this.

The last time I heard videodisc mentioned as a joke on TV, it was sometime on NBC's "Late Night With David Letterman" shortly after they had started producing the show in stereo (we had one of the first stereo TVs and a VCR capable of recording stereo broadcasts, so that was pretty cool). David Letterman was talking about how many shows were now in stereo and he said "So go buy a new RCA TV with stereo, and maybe he'll also give you a deal on one of those video disc players!"

I whole-heartedly agree with you about the stupid logos. It's a result of cable channels where it was done initially and the broadcast channels followed suit.

It's a ridiculous way of announcing the channel you're watching as if you can't check the guide yourself or you're so stupid you can't figure out what channel is what.

In the old days of broadcast TV, the FCC required station identification every so many minutes, and it was done by simple announcement after a show or between breaks, and that worked fine.

The HD channels idea of moving it inward is so that 4:3 TVs or those morons who don't know how to set aspect ratio properly are still stuck with seeing the stupid logo.

The only way to get rid of this offense to reason and intelligence is to have a grassroots campaign of complaints to the FCC about how unnecessary and annoying it is, like the overly loud commercials, and then maybe it will get changed in about 30 or 40 years.

And even worse are those commercial blurbs at the bottom of a running show that announce a later program with animation and all that crap.

I wrote letters to all the networks when this started. Fox was the first US network to do this, I wrote them telling them I would no longer watch their shows as long as it continued, and I actually got a letter from The Simpsons production department thanking me as they didn't like their show being ruined either. That was 18 years ago though. Broadcasters really don't care about their viewers. I've contacted sponsors occasionally too, like whenever I see a network show promoted in a store or fast-food place.

Again, I don't know why the people who produce shows aren't more upset about this. I'm sure SOMEONE would have enough power to demand the logos be removed or else they will stop doing their show. I've heard the Academy Awards haven't had the network logo on because industry people demanded it, also some of Steven Speilberg's movies have aired with no logo at his insistence (same for the Star Wars movies on the Fox network.)
