Yesterday, I bought a Sears 934.54780150 CED player, manufactured August 1981. I went to a woman's house & she gave me this player, along with a huge collection of CEDs; roughly about 150 discs. When I got everything home, I plugged in the player, but it was not getting any power or doing anything. Then I noticed there was a white spine inside the player. I noticed that there was one caddy in the collection without a disc inside, so I tried to insert the caddy in to the player, but it would not go in. It also gets no power when I plug it in.

Does any one know what the problem could be, or what I should do?

One more question: I noticed in the back of the player that there is a socket labeled "ACCESSORY", next to the RF & RCA connectors. Since I do not have the owner's manual, I do not know what it is for.

That's the Sears clone of the Hitachi VIP 1000. There's a port on the back for a stereo adapter, and the accessory port may be for the wired remote.

If there's a disc inside and you get no power, that might be a tough one to get out. The power switch on those is a switch that's activated by the caddy being inserted.

The problem is that the gears and belt that you can manually turn to raise the disc tray and remove the disc are located UNDER the disc. If you take the cover off, you may be able to reach the belt, or the pully to operate the lifting assembly so you can get the disc out at least.

Another issue may be that the stylus arm is not in the retracted position and may be sitting out over the disc as well.

Is there a diagram or a service manual I should use? I have never worked on a Hitachi CED player before.

Maybe Fury has one, as he's worked on a lot of them.

I just know them from careful observation after taking the cover off.

You have to be careful with the disc tray. If the stylus arm is out of the way, don't force it up by pulling on it, because that will break the gear assembly that is used to lift it up. You have to raise it by rotating the belt pully.

The stylus arm can be moved back if it is over the disc by turning the pulley that controls it's drive belt, a pulley located at the left side of the player looking at the front.

Also check and see if there's a blown fuse somewhere, or even a bad plug wire.

I'm not a big fan of these models, as I don't really like the way the disc loads. Also, they have the unique stylus. I sold all of those models and stylus that I had, recently. Two stylus went to England as they work on the PAL players over there.

I will try the suggestions. When I opened the stylus cartridge access cover, it was intact, but I will still try working on it.

If you can open the stylus cartridge cover, that means the stylus arm is in the retracted position and will not be sitting over the disc. That's good, one less problem to worry about.
