[size=18][/size] A thanks to Blindfury for submitting these pictures.
The stylus was sent to CEDatum for an evauation and report. The top picture shows the stylus as received. The picture was taken via a microscope attachment and shows the diamond tip area. Note the build-up of dirt and dust on the tip. The stylus did make a picture in the player. The picture was unstable and very grainy.
The lower picture shows the same stylus after cleaning. The chisel shape of the tip that makes contact with the disc groove can now be seen.
After cleaning this stylus plays with a nice picture and sound.

| Wow, what a difference. Make a person want to clean the stylus asap. Too bad there wasn't a good way developed to clean these at home. |

Also too bad CEDATUM doesn't have a disc cleaning service too!
I just got a disc that looks like it was dropped in a puddle or something. I'm concerned about playing it even if I clean it myself. |

Send it to dombay aka aj. Cleaning it will of course beat your stylus life up but it's a clean disc!

[size=18][/size] With a little care you can clean your stylus tip at home. Examine the tip under x20 magnification ( A student grade microscope will do this ). If you see deposit on the stylus tip, carefully remove it with fine artists brush. Dipping the brush in isopropyl alcohol may help to remove stubborn deposits.
CEDatum offers you a free stylus evaluation and report. We want to keep your stylus working. The last ones were made in the mid 1980's. |

I remember back in 1982 when I bought my new player, when I would buy a new disc, i would notice these little black, vinyl "splinters" on the lip of the caddy. I am assuming it was where the disc had just been manufactured. Man do I wish I had known these things back then. I will say this, for those of you who are new in here, if you ever need a stylus checked or cleaned, send it to John at CEDatum.net. I remember the first time I sent my first stylus to him to be checked, he gave me a price if it needs to be cleaned or a price if the stylus had to be rebuilt. I was pleasantly surprised when the stylus was fine, it just looked like the dirty one in this picture. He cleaned it and sent me a full detailed report, and the charge was 8.95! I got to meet John last July at a CED workshop, and he is just as nice and knowledgeable as he was in cyber space!

Thanks for the heads up on how to clean a stylus at home! That would save a great deal of time! I have a large magnifying class, but it isn't strong enough.
