|

Have a problem in playback with an SGT player that I had not seen before and could find no answer to on the website repair solutions page.
Upon loading the disc, the player plays fine for about a minute, then jumps ahead several seconds. Then plays fine a while and jumps ahead again.
Looking at the stylus advancing assembly, I see the gearing stay steady while the player plays fine, and then a sudden junp ahead, which causes the several second jump ahead on the disc. Then this repeats, and the player does this same thing no matter where in the disc.
Anyone ever come across this problem? And is there a solution not too difficult to do? |

Well, I found out that it was a problem with the stylus somehow. Even though the stylus played the disc, for some reason it was not getting the advancing motor to move forward in the proper small increments, and would only get it to jump suddenly a large distance at one time. Then this sudden jump forward caused the stylus to skip ahead a few seconds each time it happened.
I have no idea why the stylus seemed to play fine - good pivture and sound - and yet still do this?! |

I have had this problem twice with two different cartridges. The problem was the cantilever on the stylus was bent slightly. With the cartridge out of the player, release the retainer spring that holds the stylus in the up position and see if the the stylus hangs in the center position. If it falls to one side then that is likely to be the problem. Another indication that the canitilever is bent is that fast foward or fast reverse will not be equal in speed. I actually very carefully bent the canitilever back to center and that solved the problem.
Another problem could be the tracking arm could be in a bind. When the servo motor builds up enough torque because of the bind that it advances suddenly to catch up. |

Turns out that the stylus does hang down to one side. I'm not too keen on trying the fix myself, so I think I'll send the cartridge to Cedatum for cleaning and positioning
Thanks! |

I have a disc (Alice Doesnt Live Here Anymore) that I popped in my SGT player, it's like it is in fast forward. I tried it in my Zenith, some thing. When I put it in the SJT400, it played perfectly. Thats a mysttery. _________________ 1000 titles

I need to correct the statement I made above. I did not bend the cantilever to get the stylus to hang straight, rather I rotated the small plastic ball that the fly lead connects to. |

Thanks for that info! It was a great help. By rotatng the upper flylead connection slightly, the stylus now tracks just fine and problem solved.
I did notice that it's a small adjustment. Initially I did it a bit too much and no picture. Then I backed up a little and it was perfect. |
