25 years ago today, on Friday, 27 June, 1986, it was a very sad day for RCA. It was the day when the CED format died for good. There was a disc released for this day called Memories Of Videodisc. The factory in Indiana was later used again for something else; I am not sure if it still exists or what it is used for. During this time, RCA employees thought the CED format would be forgotten, but with the cedmagic.com web site & forum, we are keeping the format going strong.

Here's to the next 25 years!

Sad day, and 2 days after the bday Sad At least I was able to even find and enjoy the format! I'd love to be able to tell the employees what they did was amazing and that I for one am grateful for their hard work! It makes me feel all warm and nostalgic for my childhood when I watch them, even though I didn't get to see them as a kid in the 80's. It's how I wished VHS was... great cover art, huge box(caddy), not only that, I'm a sucker for vinyl and of course the slightly dirty, gritty video of the 80's and before, everything is just way too clear and 4320p hd hahaha. I don't know what it is about this format of video, but I abso lutely love it!

Right. There's not much better for me than watching a couple of low budget features on CED, like The Last Chance or Death Race 2000, on my old (1998) 64" Pioneer CRT rear projector to make it seem like a grindhouse theater double feature. A little popcorn and chatter make it perfect.

Or, even more fun, a few of the several horror, sci-fi, thriller or exploitation CED classics to bring back the old late Friday and Saturday night insomniac theaters on that TV channel that faded in & out, or you always had to run out and turn the antenna to get.

The grittiness of the resolution helps the effect along, and it's even better when there are the occasional video skips, soundtrack pops and crackles, and video dropouts to bring the whole thing into being. The only things missing are used car commercials and the 'technical difficulties - one moment please' banner.

Some of the CEDs that Dad left us and that we've enjoyed recently late night, since regular TV currently has little to offer in this way, are:

Visiting Hours
He Knows You're Alone
The Thing (original)
When a Stranger Calls
The Boys from Brazil
Good Guys Wear Black

Looking forward to:
Friday the 13th (all 5 of them)
Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Christine
Dressed to Kill
Impulse

And on and on. They really don't have to be low budget to create an enjoyable late night festival, as there's plenty of big budget films that, for some reason regardless of the best intentions of the Hollywood studios, have that low budget patina, and usually unintentionally.

There's nothing like CEDs to give you this late night effect. LDs are too slick and uptown, VHS technology eventually got too good, Betamax comes closest but you can't fix those yourself too often.

The only thing I've seen on DVD that's like this are the public domain products like the East-West DVD double features mastered from old 1" tape masters or old well worn film reels that have run the TV circuits already. They're really pretty good in this way, and if you like CEDs, I'm sure you'd like them as well.

Beetle, I thought you were going to be all over that link, when I sent it to you the first time. I am always watching out for my bud...

Ah, the end of CEDs. I remember going into my local CED shop. The owner told me that CEDs are at an end and he would continue to support it for as long as he could. Well, that didn't last long and he started selling off his rental stock. He had a great shop too.

Dean, I'm getting gun shy when they say "very good", some folks have a different description. I bought a Carrie disc that was in Very Good shape, it looked like I had drug it behind my car!!!! and then I took it out, and it had cake frosting or something all over it.
I remember those day too, when they vowed they were going to keep selling them.........NOT But now, in here if feels like a little bit of that old nostalgia.

I know what you mean. I have been burned before. Well, one man's trash is another man's treasure, unfortunately, some holding trash, think it is treasure. So, what does "very good" really mean?............

That's right, and that's why when dealing on ebay I only get things that have a return policy.

Never had a problem buying since ebay made changes to their system in favor of buyers a few years ago. Used to be pretty much in favor of sellers and I got stuck with such things as LD players packed lousy and arriving broken, and the shipper saying fault of packer and the seller saying fault of shipper, and so no refund.

It's a little different now, and so far for the last couple of years, I haven't had a problem when I had to return something. It's always better when electronics are shipped UPS or Fedex and those two will pick up the stuff and send it back without charging the buyer for the return when there is shipping damages. Or sometimes they leave the damaged item for you to do what you want with. USPS demands you give it all to them, even if it might be a fixable item. Then they throw it away and take forever to pay the claim.

'Very Good' and any other rating on used stuff is always skewed by the subjective point of view, so I just consider that a given. Very few sellers are wont to describe their used items in a way that might lessen their appeal, so often there are things left unmentioned. A few do though.
