|

| On the cedmagic.com web site, the title database shows every CED title listed along with a rating of common, uncommon, rare, very rare, and extremely rare. Does any one know of the equivalent information for CED players? I would guess that some CED players are more common than others. Which CED players are the most common to the least common? I am conjecturing that the RCA players are more common than some of the other brands & manufacturers. |

If it follows true to form- the cheaper the more common. I imagine the 90's were given away with large purchases as an incentive program (just speculation on my part) _________________ Scott

I agree. The players that are considered "bottom of the line" or players with little or no extras, are much more easy to come by. If there were a rare RCA I would said it is the SKT series that were being sold when the axe fell on our wonderful format:( The more the features, the fewer there are out there.
I will say this though, I have seen the SGT250s, SJT300s & the SJT400s, the newer ones, the ones with a full remote control, all see to go for close to the same price, average is, what do the rest of you think? 200 - 250?
Of course i'm not considered a "serious" collector. . _________________ 1000 titles

From my years of experience in collecting players, I have found that the SFT100 is in large supply because it was the first launch player and produced in large numbers. True that the lower bottom end players are plentiful, probably because of their original price point and affordability. Players in stereo and with extra features may have been produced in less quantities due to their original price point, which was high for the time and still is today.
The SKT series players are perhaps some of the rarer players, with the SKT400 as the rarest.
Rarity can also be a case of supply and demand. Collectors have always sought out the higher end players with stereo, remotes, AV outputs, and random access capabilities. As noted by the activity given these players on ebay.
I would say that some of the other branded players might be rare, due to their lower production numbers. They may not draw a premium price as a lot of collectors seem to steer clear of many of these players due to a lack of replacement parts and stylii. These players may be collected more as personal museum pieces rather than daily use players. Finding these players in good condition can also be a challenge.
So to summarize. Rarity today would be based on production numbers (if we could get those), original price point, when in the life cycle of CED the players were produced (again affecting their numbers), and current demand. |

Some of the players I have never seen advertised for sale online anywhere are the Elmo VEC-200, JC Penney 686-5705, RCA SJT400X, RCA SKT265, and the Sanyo VDR3000.
I also agree, at least from what I have seen & read online, that the RCA SJT & RCA SKT series players, from 1983 & 1984, and also some of the players with extra features like remote controls, and stereophonic sound, seem to be more scarce; these concepts also seemingly affect rarity. |

Agreed, but don't forget the beloved 1982 SGT250, which was the very first stereo player, and the first RCA player to come with an infrarad, remote!!! It is almost exactly the same as the 1983 SJT300. The only difference between the remotes (which look exactly alike) is the SGT250 remote at the very top says, "Rapid Access" where the SJT300 says "Hi Speed Scan". Even with the different label, they both work on either player. _________________ 1000 titles
