I just won a sears player off ebay for $26! They said they wanted to ship player with disc in it because they were told that's the way to do it with this player. Is that right? Like some half assed shipping tabs?

Not a good idea. I have shipped quite a few of those Hitachi brand players and the caddy latch mechanism can be damaged by shipping with a caddy inserted. The proper way is to use a very thich piece of corrugated cardboard with about a 2 inch by 45 degree angle cut on the two corners that insert in the player. The original shipping insert was a thick piece of corrugated plastic. They also need a shipping screw that locks the tracking arm in position.

Disc in? Yikes! No way. I could only imagine how much flopping around an inserted disc would do in one of these machines. I'm guessing the intention there would be to keep the playback arm from moving around too much and damaging the needle? I'd actually ask them to take the needle cartridge out and box it separately.

I got a sears stereo player off ebay a while back and by the time it got to me the pin that locks the cartridge to the arm have popped up and the cartridge had unseated itself a little. Thank goodness it was OK becuase those things are hard to find.

So I got the player and of course after asking to not have disc in it, it was shipped with it in Evil or Very Mad I know this because I opened it up before turning on, like I do with any player I get. Took the disc and the caddy out, check the usual's, belts, cartridge and such. Go to plug her in and you got me where the power button is ? Am I missing something, or does it come on automatically if you stick a disc in? I did notice the door is to high like and that the weird gear that lifts and lowers the caddy holder? is only like half way up and im not jammin anything in or open on the player. Any advice?

There's no power button on these, they come on automatically when you stick a disc in. First one of these I had confused me the same way too, but Panasonic 8-track decks work the same way!

unplug the player - lift the circuit board and use ur finger to turn the motor which turns the belt which raises the loading tray.
Keep turning it til the loading tray is fully up.

Then put the circuit board back in place and try loading a disc.

You probably will not have to change the timing belt. I have repaired 10 or more of the Hitachi brand players and they never needed a timing belt.
