Crying or Very sad Nobody Crying or Very sad OK I'll start off, even though I talk too much:))
My name is Scott, I bought my first CED player in September 1982, it was an SGT250, the first stero player with an infrared remote. I kept it until around 1986, whan I sold it to a gentleman who still sold the players and the movies. About 3 years ago, one of the guys that it a member here, Jordan, was on the new Star Trek movie site, started a thread about the Capacitance Electronic Disc Player, and I started PM'ing him. it took a long time but this past September (28 years after I bought the first one!) I found a player on Craigs List that was in driving distance. I brought it home and thats when the bug bit! That same week, I bought a SGT250 from CEDpro, and the rest is history. Anyone else?

I'll go next.

My name is Steve.
I got my first player about 2 weeks ago and just got it working last night Very Happy

I first found out about CED when I was buying some laserdiscs on ebay and the seller had some 'video records' (yes that is what he called them!) and linked to CEDMagic. Then I saw AVGN do a review on youtube on an sft100 and I fell in love with it's retroness.

My collection so far contains:
5 NTSC discs which I can't play yet Crying or Very sad
8 PAL discs which I am going to start watching now
and a Hitachi VIP101P.

Need to start looking for a NTSC player next... Roll on payday!

My name is Ryan

I know I bought a ced before I bought a player, it was Dark crystal! I really cant remember if it was the ced I bought or a video on youtube I looked at first that got me addicted! Im a sucker for the dirty 80's film grain and vhs was nice, but when I saw ced, I shat my pants over how it looked and felt while watching one. Obviously not as a good as dvd.... but better than vhs. I was such a happy 80's cheesed out film fan I cant express it in words! First player I bought was local, sjt-090 with 34 stacked discs haha didn't know at the time about stacking Sad , all it needed was a belt and it still runs amazing, bout a 10 minute drive away... then of course I was addicted and had to have more hahah!

Ryan, you and I must be kindred spirits!!! I feel exactly the same way about these CEDs as you do, No comaparison between CED or VHS! I have always been a collector of records, LPs I went in to a furniture store to get my licens tags renewed. As I said in another post, My Bro in law had purchased a VCR that was the size of small car! and he paid 2100 bucks for it. Anyway, I went in to get the tag, I saw a huge stand up cutout of Star Wars that said MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU! ....TONIGHT! and the price ws 39.95 less than half the price of Star Wars on VHS. I bought my SGT250 that very day. I regret ever selling it.

Am I in the right room? CED Anonymous? Smile

Scott

Collector of long standing, well ok, closer to 4-5 months Wink I got interested when a friend in Alabama was talking about he use to have CED's and threw them all away. I was curious as I didn't recall them- we never had CED or LaserDisc when I was growing up and never bought any when I was out on my own. Sooooo, looked it up and said 'cool, I gotta get me one of these' Took a look on Craigslist and lo and behold : $40(?) pristine in box SGT200 and 40ish movies.

Thanks to the crazy Kentucky connection, I now have an additional 200 discs, putting me up around 650-700 (only another 1,000 to go) Cool

..being that I signed up almost a year ago, when a co-worker who knew I liked and collected laserdiscs told me that she had a player and discs in storage she no longer uses. Turns out it was a CED player, and a stereo one to boot. The machine now sits proudly with my laserdisc player, Odyssey 2 and Intellivision.

I watch films on the player from time to time --bought the stereo CED of ALLEGRO NON TROPPO on ebay a few months back-- and perhaps one of the members here could comment on the problems I have been recently encountering. I listed these on a separate topic.

Hello, my name is Dean (recovering CED addict)

I bought my first CED player back in 1981, a Realistic CED1 with the long corded remote control. I have dabbled in CEDs ever since. I still have discs that I purchased new, back in 1981. I currently own 11 working players and one dead player and about 550 discs. I have always had at least 1 player up and running in my entertainment center. I currently have 3 players up and running in three different rooms of my home. I gave up on laserdiscs, dumped my player and discs, but kept my CED players and collection. I have made some great friends just from this forum. I guess nobody really understands the addiction to this format like those on this site, which makes it easy to make new friends that share that passion (Scott and Scott).

Keep the hobby alive and just keep playing those heavy discs!

My name is Kyle.

I am a collector of old audio-visual multimedia including records, reel-to-reel tapes, 8-track tapes, Betamax, VHS, DVD, and, of course, CEDs. I first discovered the Capacitance Electronic Disc format 6 years ago when I found some video discs in a thrift store with the words "RCA Selectavision Video Discs" on the front cover, but I did not know what they were. I decided that I wanted to start collecting CEDs back in the Fall of 2009. I placed a bid on Ebay for a big stash of CEDs, and my collection is still growing today. I found a CED player with some discs advertised on Craigslist in the city of El Cajon, California back in February, 2010. Unlike some other CED enthusiasts, it is the only CED player I own. It is a RCA SKT-090, which is a lower end model of CED player. Just a few days before I bought this player, I found a huge stack of CEDs at The Salvation Army in Santee, California, which really thrilled me. I bought the whole stack for only $12.00.

I would like to find more CED players & discs for sale, but they are seemingly scarce; at least where I live. My RCA SKT-090 is the only CED player I have seen on Craigslist before or since then. I hardly ever see any discs or players in any thrift stores or swap meets. The stores in my area do not have very many interesting audio-visual items for sale; ever 8-track tapes are going extinct in thrift stores. Whenever I go to the stores, I only stay for a few minutes & leave empty-handed. All of the media & appliances they have are from the 1990s & 2000s. However, whenever I do see the discs for sale, I always buy them, no matter what titles they are.

I am happy to know that there are other people who are also interested in the CED format & who see it as a part of our history, and that they do their part to preserve it & keep it going well in to the future.

Hi - I just joined the site tonight.

I don't have much expertise or a large collection of CED merchandise at this point. I ran across this format quite a few years ago and fell in love with it. I actually didn't even know it existed back in the 80's. I am only 31 so at the time I was quite young and my family only owned VHS equipment.

As I grew older and earned my own money I started buying in to many media formats, but I especially love those from the 80's.

Regarding older optical formats I have mostly collected laserdiscs, but have started trying to increase my CED collection. I might be able to close a deal on over 2,000 discs here shortly. The seller is dragging his feet. He doesn't care for them any longer and wants to get rid of them, but as most true collectors do he is freezing up now as he ponders losing a lifetime collection.

I have read these forums for awhile and thought it was time I joined. Hopefully you will welcome me!

Yeah, Midwinter please post your titles that you are willing to share once you've sorted them out. I just did that myself and my 'want' list of sorts.

In another thread, I stated that I bought my first machine, a SGT-250 in the early 80's with a few intro movies. Angry when RCA dumped CED's...I held onto my machine. When my boys were growing up, they actually liked the format.....but I only had a few movies to show. I kept threatening to buy a big collection, but was always too late. We had a huge satellite dish with a pro-quality VHS in overdrive and so I taped hundreds of movies.

Last winter (two winters ago), there was this guy towards Seattle that was selling his collection-cheap. I said I would buy it, but never got over the pass in time due to lousy weather. He sold to someone else.

Recently, I had my machine repaired and I bought a couple of lots. Only 175 or so and many I don't want (see list).

Either this site gets overloaded easily, or I'm doing something wrong-I get the 'connection was reset' notification more times than naught.Sad

Yes, I receive this error a lot also. When I get more details on the lots I have been trying to purchase I will let everyone know.

Hello everyone!

I Live in the UK and I currently don't own any CED players or discs but im on the lookout for a player (preferably the Hitachi VIP 201p but I will settle for the 101p if I cannot find the 201p at a decent price)

I first found out about CED when I was going though my stage of being obsessed by the LD (Laserdisc) format and instantly thought that CED was far cooler and much much more collectable and was instantly hooked when I found out that there were PAL CEDs and players. however as the format is much rarer in the UK than in the US and im having a hard time getting my hands on a player so I can start a collection of my own . Sad

Welcome to our little club!!! We are thrilled to have you. The way I understand it, the players in the UK won't play here, and the players here won't play there? I do hope you you find one, appaarently they are more plentiful here. Can you find RCA brands where you are? Again, welcome, and good luck on your hunt! You are right, this is a very addictive hobby!!!

Right. If they are as rare in the UK as you say, seems like this is worth it to me, 2 players and a bunch of movies to boot. And as I recall, the UK isn't so large that you can't drive there to pick it up.

Ive actually contacted the seller directly and ive done a deal with him so I can just get the Hitachi player with no discs so I can build up my own library of discs of my own tastes rather than getting loads of discs that I have no desire to watch

Fuel prices in the UK are expensive compared to the US and we have allot of windy roads that don't quite lead you where you want to go. Not only that but we have a very high population density for such a small country therefore there is allot of traffic on our roads which in turn leads to lengthened journey times. I would be tempted to go pick up the player but with a full time job and the seller working night shifts it makes pick-up unrealistic
