I have about 40 VHS tapes with southern gospel misic on them. I don't care for some of the singers, and I want to pick just one or two songs off each tape. Is it possible to put all of that on one DVD? I mean is it possible to copy 20 or 30 songs off VHS and on to the same DVD? |
As was said, they are called 'capture devices'. I have one called KWorld. It was around $45. At the time there was a really friendly freeware that was supposed to make using capture devices easier. True dat....but the freeware didn't like my particular capture device and things were not exactly seamless. However, the software that came with the capture device is adequate.
So I guess my advice while shopping for capture device is; look at reviews with ease of use being a HIGH priority. I'm slowly converting things to DVD's like VHS and family camcorder tapes. I also have ADAT, so I can rob soundtracks to put in that medium if I want. My PC is not close to my analog sources, so I have to bring players to the capture device, which at times is less than handy.
Depending on how new your PC's video card is, you'll probably want to update that at least. And.....if you're really after great sound, your audio card as well. If you don't have a DVD burner on your PC, you can purchase an external unit...much like we used to buy external CD ROM's.
You want the picture too with the songs, correct.....you're not just trying to rob the soundtrack?

Yes, I want the video too. How much space is on one DVD? _________________ 1000 titles

Once you rip the audio video, run it through a program like FormatFactory, you can compress to you hearts delight. If you are only doing 20videos of 4 minutes each, pretty sure it would fit on a cd-r _________________ Scott

Generally, recordable DVD's hold 4.7GB. But...there are some burners that 'layer' and a few that can laser write both sides. But figure 4.7GB for a normal burner. Really when you get into this, the software is everything.

Regardless of what the package says- you will only 4.3- 4.4gb on a dvd. You get more on DVD-R than you do on a plus
I burn several hundred audio and video discs per year on various distro groups.... _________________ Scott

It all depends on how compressed, I generally can put 6-12 hrs worth of video on 1 DVD-R. So if your videos only =1-2 hrs total, you may not to do anything to it.
If you want- give me a list of what you want, and ship the tape and I'll do it for you.... course it might cost ya a few CED's _________________ Scott

Yep , I can label each track seperate. copy the tape, run it through Audacity, tweak the overall sound with MP3Gain, tag it with MP3Tag is what I do for encoding cassettes and reels. That's what gets done for the groups.
Video is a little different, but doable.
When you get ready, we'll iron out what you really want and go from there _________________ Scott

OK, will do. You could think of them as Christian music videos, each lasting just a few minutes. Some longer than others. I don't think there are over 15 - 20 at the most videos that I would want on there. I'll work on it, and shoot you and email when I get it done. Youl will have to buy a disc. You can let me know the cost of it too. _________________ 1000 titles

Scott, I'm almost ready to ship the video cassettes to you. I'll paypal you the money to pay for shipping them back. I can write down the songs, but on all but 2 or the tapes, I can run the tape up to the song I want on there. The 2 i'm talking about, she has 2 songs on one tape, With those, i'll list them in order they appear. Thanks again!!! Let me know of a CED you have been looking for, and I'll make it happen if at all possible!!!
Thanks,

| Beetlescott wrote: | | Real1shepherd wrote: | I agree.....but I think the death of VHS was the analog format in general; ala CD's versus cassettes-it was all very related. Given the fact that the consumer had no longer to deal with tape 'wear', breakage & dropouts. VHS didn't go down easily, as VHS tapes and DVD movies sold side by side for yrs. People had the machines already and were often not willing to jump ship. For me, it was the deliberate absence of the special features on VHS movies (that were contained in DVD's) and the easy access of same.
In the end, convenience won out. The only rising star and current link to analog are LP's.....which have had a tremendous resurgence within the audiophile community.

I'm so glad LPs are making a comback! I love vinyl!!!! |
Ditto on that, Beetlescott .
I'm also guilty of having an evergrowing vinyl collection (alongside 800+ CEDs!!), thanks to all the high quality 180gm reissues of long out-of-print/rare and new indie rock that's hitting the shelves! Who would have believed it?, ..you know, at the rate once loved forms of physical media are being swallowed up by the great cyber-digital "Nothing"...
Real1sheperd: Good point about the 'Special Features' in new DVD releases(non-existent in VHS). That may very well be what's slowing down the inevitable decline of the format, in a sense providing it a temporary stay of 'execution'. _________________ "It's DIMENSIA!... not dimentia..." |
