|
|
I've had for almost 15 years as part of a preservation project with my company a rather large collection of RCA CED Videodiscs and players. The company is on the ropes and is expected to file bankruptcy soon, I've been tasked with liquidating these assets.
There are four players, an SJT-090, SJT-100, SJT-300, and SJT-400. The 90 and the 400 work. The 400 has the remote. The 300 has a remote, but I can't find it in the collection right now. The 100 needs a door belt and the 300 needs a little more TLC (I think a turntable adjustment).
The database that had the list of discs went belly up with the server it was on. It is unlikely that it will be reconstructed. I can tell you there are 5 shelves (shelves, not bookcases) of discs filled with perhaps 200 discs.
Of course they'd like these to go to a collector, preferably one who participates on this site because originally the terms of the preservation project was they could never be destroyed. I'm assuming though that at this point in time they can't be fussy one way or the other.
Because of the state of the company, they can't pack or ship any of this. Besides the cost of shipping would scare anybody away I think. You would have to come to zip code 12952 where the company is to pick it up or arrange for shipping yourself.
If you have questions, please feel feel to post them.
Thanks,
Dan |

Wow! Do you have any idea of the cost? How much are you wanting for the SJT400? I wouild be interested in a maachine. I would love to see the discs go to someone in here too! I have shipped a few hundred CEDs over the last few weeks, it is quite doable. I say this to the collectors out here. The shipping might not be as much as you think. Shipping is somewhere in the neighborhood of a dollar perdisc, give or take. What shape are the movies in? Do the players look good? Give us some prices:) _________________ 1000 titles

The majority of the collection was donated, some of it was purchased over the years when business was good. So the shape of the movies vary from well taken care of to used-and-abused, but let me say this, that 95% are very good shape.
The players are in pretty good shape, especially the 400, best player shape of them all I think. There is no said price they are looking for. I've just been told, see if you can get them to go to someone here and make some money if you can, otherwise they'll end up going with the property.
So what I'm going to do is leave it open until the end of the month, we can wait that long I'm told to see who can give the best offer and bring it back to them, but as I mentioned, they won't pack & ship any of it, so somebody has to come get it.
Thanks,
Dan |

I'm interested in the 400.... Scott you have too many players, help a brother out
I'm unsure of the no ship clause though. $40 gets it across the country, so state a price get paypal and then ship it- you aren't out any money that I can see??? _________________ Scott

| The issues with the no ship clause have nothing to do with money. They have to do with money and staff. Plus, they've never shipped a player, only received and all the packing material is gone with the wind. |

Well that's certainly a limiting factor. I have a friend in the Bronx, but I'm not going to ask him to go 700 miles r/t for me. 20 miles I would
Ah well, good luck with the search for a buyer(s) _________________ Scott

800 is the deductible? Ouch.... how about a pirate patch, that'd be $10 total
Mom had laser surgery on her eyes last year, no idea how much that was though _________________ Scott

You know, not to be rude or anything, but the fact that you resurface ~every two years with some new hard-luck fire sale isn't the part that bugs me about all this.
What actually gets on my nerves is that we still have to wade through the fallout of your "CED fascination society" or "national capacitance lending library" or "technocom resurrection enterprise" or whatever it was that you were begging for donations to start up back in 1998.
And you did get donations, didn't you? In good faith. Which you are now selling off or quietly implying that you'll junk. That's chutzpah. Thank heavens I didn't send you anything.
It only took 2 years after you started asking for freebies for you to give up and start selling it off - and as far as I can tell, 13 years later you still have no takers for your changing yet consistently inflexible terms (outrageous prices; no-ship policies).
I honestly wish you all the best of luck getting rid of it this time around, because this whole episode is like a bad penny that just won't go away. |

Now my intention is not to turn this thread into a flame war nor a feel sorry thread, but to simply answer your reply with my point of view.
I was first introduced to CED's around 1990, I inherited a collection of discs and a player from a relative. Around 1995 or so was when I first found cedmagic.com and the original list-serv, because at that point in time there was no PHPBB. In '95, I was still in high school, and I with a group of friends had started doing computer related work for people and started a company.
One of our hobbies was the enjoyment of the CED format, the mystique of it, and the coincidence that all of us were born in 1981. We thought it would be an interesting project to preserve as many as we could, discs and players.
There was only one man from Maryland who sent us anything; several players, and boxes upon boxes of discs. All that he wanted in return was shipping costs. We never did get around to fully reimbursing him. I won't make excuses as to why. So if you are that man from Maryland, I will admit now that we owe you 10+ years with compounded interest worth of shipping cost, and I'd love to personally settle the debt. As for the rest of the collection; discs and players we bought it. The collection is 50/50. Half we built up ourselves and the other half he donated.
For most of the life of the company, it was treading water, and when times get rough you'd be surprised what gets thrown out the window. John Wayne said "Life is hard, life is harder when you're stupid." Well we were, or at least I certainly was. So you are correct, every few years when times got tight, the collection was looked at as an asset that could be liquidated. And as you pointed out, there never were any takers, and thankfully we scraped by, so no part of the collection was ever sold, with the exception of duplicate discs.
The difference now, is I'm it, I'm the last one. Brad died last April, and rest gave me their "worthless" shares. They now live in other parts of the country where the IT work is more consistent and profitable. If I can somehow separate the collection from the partnerships list of assets, I will hang on to it as long as I can, otherwise, it is what it is, and I won't bother anyone here with it again. |

This just confuses me.
If you're so desprite to sell off this collection then why not offer shipping.
But at the same time you admit to not reimbursing someones cost 10 years ago so why would anyone trust you enough to send you money via paypal.
Theres plently of good people on this forum that would appreciate some of the items you have but you seem very unwilling to help them aquire them.
You are just dangling the carrot and moving the goalposts so to speak.
I started collecting discs 6 months ago and im trying to get all 272 uk titles and i think im already past the 200 mark.
Some of the discs people off here kindly sent me just for shipping costs.
If you orignally got a bulk of the stuff off here in the first place isnt only fair to offer it back here and be reasonable about it? |

Like I said: I didn't send you anything. So I'm not the one you stiffed 12 years ago.
As for the rest, my condolences.
I could go through and tally the inconsistencies in this epic from 1998 to now, but what's the point?
Good luck. |
