There aren't too many of those direct drive players out there. What is the benefit of these over belt driven players? Are they more dependable like direct drive record players? How well did the moters RCA used work? Also, for both belt driven and direct drive, how is the right timing achieved if the timing is found to be off? -C |

Direct-drive turntables have the advantage of being inherently simpler than belt-driven units, as the turntable itself is part of the motor mechanism. And in the case of the RCA player line, the direct-drive models have the advantage of a feedback loop courtesy of a couple of Hall sensors underneath the turntable. This feedback loop ensures the turntable always spins at 450 RPM.
RCA's belt-driven models use a line-frequency mechanism to maintain 450 RPM, but it lacks feedback to keep itself in check, and thus can get out of whack causing a variable turntable speed that results in the color shifts often seen during playback with F/G players.
