I'll start this off by saying I'm far from good with electronics, and REALLY new to this CED thing, I am enjoying it though.
I currently have 4 players, I bought them off a guy he said only 1 worked and the others wouldn't load discs. So I took them home, and have been using the 1 working one (SGT 200) heavily. Was having a problem with it occasionally not taking the disc out of the caddy, figured that out, arm was sticking. It has started to occasionally give a slight wobble sound for only 30 seconds or so and go away, is this acceptable behavior or should I be looking at something?
Making a long story short, the SJT 200 clearly needs the new little loading belt as it plays CED when I load it by hand, but it spins the discs violently so I had the shut it off the second I got it running. I'm hoping this will be fixed by a turntable adjustment on cedatum's tech tips, anybody have experience with this?
The SJT 100 again needs that little loading belt, because it actually did turn to goo too... (why??) but was working perfectly when loaded by hand until I tried the fast forward, the it kind of gave me a wobble sound, again hoping to fix with adjustments. This makes me wonder if I am damaging my machine and/or ced by using the "visual search" and "rapid access"?
Lastly I have a SGT 100, which really only seemed to have a CED left in it (which left said CED dusty as hell, but did fill my one empty case), but when I popped it out and played it again, it turned out to be the worst of all. the caddy going in felt like it was almost grinding it's way into the machine. the player started with a nasty screech. it was hanging at 00 but did play once I used FF to 02 (Several movies). It gave me a very poor picture quality, shaky, losing colour, audio was seemingly good. I had it running with it's cover off and it seemed to make a loading sound every second or so, not loud but noticeable. And when I stopped it it again gave a pretty good screech. Anybody know what could be causing this? If it's stylus/needle can I actually clean it with rubbing alcohol and a q tip or should I get it refurbished by cedatum?
How easy is the new loading belt to put on? Somebody must have some good advice from doing these, anything an idiot would need to know, I need to know. Do I have to use all new gears or can I just clean the goo off? Is cedatum the only place to find these or is there some generic one I can just go pick up at an electronics parts supplier?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

i cant help ya with the g and f models but i have replaced the function motor belts on j and k and it is very easy
http://www.cedmagic.com/tech-info/function-motor.html
as for the goo belts, i think it was cause they were petroleum based belts and after 20 years the go back to oil? haha and most if not all replacement belts are neoprene these days? not sure although the belts are easy to replace, getting the goo off is just time consuming, q tips and goo gone or rubbing alcohol! i think i even saw in these forums ammonia? i hope u get lucky and its just the belts! happened on 3 players for me! just the belt and she was going again! _________________ I dont own

Welcomed to CEDmagic!!! We love it when new people arrive!!! There are a lot of people right here who can help you with all these players, the goo, is the old belt, and must be cleaned off before adding a new function belt, (two dollars on this site) I wouldn't try to clean the stylus, you will mess up the leadwire. CEDatum will look at it for you, he is very honest, if they just need to be cleaned, that is what he will do. I have sent several to him, and he does excellant work. Good Luck!!!! _________________ 1000 titles

I ordered 2 new belts from Cedatum, I have the SJT 100 running perfectly (although at this point I'm spinning the gears by hand).
But of course, murphy's law, since I opened the SGT 200 the turn table is catching (I think) as it occasionally fluctuates the colour. I need to put fresh grease on the loading arm as well, at least it should be nothing major.
Thanks again for the insight, I will be pestering you all again when I get a little more free time. |

I think I'm the only one (or one of few) CED collectors who prefers the F/G models and has enough patience to deal with them. For starters, if you haven't done so yet, I may suggest replacing the turntable belt in your SGT-200. Here's the deal with the F/G models: the belt drive itself is not precise enough to rotate the disc without causing the picture to wobble and/or go psychedelic or black-and-white, so they added a magnetic ring to the bottom of the turntable and magnet poles on the motor, which interact with the ring to control the turntable rotation more precisely. I first learned this from Mario, I believe (another member of this forum, who used to work at the player factory), and learned more about it from an RCA training manual. Anyway, over time, wear and tear on the belt can cause it to loosen up; when this happens, it messes up the rotation bad enough that the magnetic ring & pole setup cannot correct the problem.
It's also possible that the magnetic ring is weak too. If you take off the turntable to replace the belt, take a screwdriver and GENTLY run it around the ring. You should be able to feel the magnetic fields acting on the screwdriver. There are 16 segments in the ring, and if the ring is good, you can feel them with the screwdriver. If you feel nothing, the ring may be weak. In that case, you would need to salvage a turntable from another player.
The last possibility, of course, would be poor lubrication on the turntable spindle, but I'd check the belt and the magnetic ring first. I don't remember what kind of lubrication the turntable spindle takes, but I can probably find out.
As far as the SGT-100, it sounds like it may have lubrication problems in several places, but it could probably also use a new turntable belt. And as annoying as it may be, the screeching sound that you hear when you flip the lever to "LOAD/UNLOAD" is typical on the F/G models; what I've always done is I just lower the lever slowly and gently. But if it's also doing it upon startup, that's not normal, though I've seen that before. I'm wondering if the lever is out of alignment. It's mounted to a cam, and it can get off sometimes. That could also be possibly what's making it so difficult to load caddies. This happened to my first CED player. The lever can be adjusted using hex ("Allen") wrenches; I can explain more if you need me to. |
