So my wife picked up a SJT-100 with 21 movies for $40 at an auction.

Since I know almost nothing, a few questions:

1. Is there anyway to clean up the "noise" on the screen. It is like watching a really old VHS tape, with all sorts of noise lines on the screen that flicker in and out. I have heard CED is supposed to be better than VHS, but right now it does not seem that way.

2. Does anyone know of a demodulator or something I can hook up to the coax out to go from RF to RCA inputs for video and audio? It would help integration into my HT system. Might be cheaper to buy a better player?

3. I opened it up, and it is REALLY clean inside. It is amazing how well everything is laid out and LABELED! They really don't make electronics like this anymore! (Okay, not a question, just a comment!)

Look forward to chatting with all of you!

Welcome to the magic world of CEDs!!! the reason you have lines or "noise" is because the stylus needs to ether be cleaned or rebuilt, there is a website that shows exatly what happens, the CEDatum. (www.CEDatum.net). The player you have is one of the first made, it is in mono, they do have stero models, that have the rca outs, plus the newer stereo (most of them) have a remote. If you go to the FAQ, you can get an idea of what is the best player to invest in. The SGT250, (the one I use) is the last "belt driven" player made. People around her call it a TANK, it is so tough. The SJT400/SKT400 is top of the line, it loaded with all kinds of goodies. The movies have to be stacked vertically, if there are a lot of them, don't stack them flat on top of one another, that will mess the ones on the bottom up. The FAQ has answers on there that will explain how to care for the discs too. Good luck! If I can help you in any way, just shoot me a PM. Please add CED in the subject line, so it doesn't go to my junk folder. I also have 200 movies I am selling off too. Be very careful, this format is very addictive!!!! Goodluck!!!

Being into vinyl, my guess was a dirty stylus. The FAQ mentions a dirty stylus would cause skipping...something I have not really noticed..so I was not sure...

I did clean the stylus, the same way I clean my record player, after my posting...i will let you know the results.

Yeah, I have been storing CED like my records: vertical!

As for addictive...I could see that. I love the retro look of the playback. As a child of the 80s, there is something really nostalgic about it.

Unfortunately, unlike vinyl, digital video (DVD, Blu-Ray), is FAR superior.

But, so far, I am having fun!

What is your ebay id?

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!!!

I hope you will have fun with this great antiquated format.

Often if the playback is noisy, it is usually due to an old used up stylus. Sometimes cleaning a stylus helps, but usually the stylus is just worn out. CEDatum can certainly help you out with either a replacement stylus or rebuilding your current stylus to new specs. You can find their website at cedatum.net

There are ways to update your player to output through RCA plugs, however, it does take some knowledge of electronics and soldering.
You can pickup a mono or stereo player that has the RCA jacks on ebay for usually a reasonable price. I have found some real bargains on ebay.

If you are looking for movies to support your new favorite hobby, ebay can be a good place, but also a hit and miss option. Look for sellers that also are collectors and you will usually find movies in great condition. Beetlescott is a good source and he has some movies new and still in cello wrappers. Nothing like taking the wrapper off a near 30 year old disc and popping in for a movie night!

Good luck and welcome to the forum! I, like Beetlescott, like to tinker with these machines, so drop your questions on the forum, someone might have the answers you are looking for.

THANK YOU BOTH! for the warm welcome.

Well I cleaned the stylus, watching 9 to 5, noise still there, and in the last
half of the disc, jumping around like mad...me thinks bad stylus.

As for a solder solution, that was actually kinda what I was looking for.
I am very comfortable with it (I actually repair old analog gear, anyone want a Marantz 2138B I just restored!? Smile )

I will check out cedatum.net tomorrow, probably order a new stylus.

Thanks again for all the help!

Good luck! When I first got back into CED,s I had to send my stylus in for cleaning, and I went ahead and bought an extra one for "just in case". (wait until you decide on the player you plan to keep. I sent to of them to CEDatum, to be rebuilt. After looking at them, he shot me an email back saying the just needed to be cleaned, He could of takne me to the cleaners, but he is very honest. Also, CEDpro is another good one, He rebuilds players, and sells them. I have an SJT300 that is almost ready to sale, shoot me an email and I can make you a great deal. I'd rather give a fellow CED'r a break than give the money to Ebay/Paypal. Beetlescott@msn.comm. Be sure to put CED in the subjtect line!!!

Good Luck!!!!!
Scott

Why thank you Dean. I have been toying with the idea of keeping the SJT300. I have loaded ever single movie that I have in my bug, (it's butt is really dragging. The way I figure it, even though the movies SEEM so heavy, if you count correctly, 200 movies, is 300 lbs. Now that is the weight of 2 average people. they just seem so dog gone heavey.

Scott, keep your SJT300, I would be willing to send you my extra sort of non-working SJT300 for you to part out.

I think I will, if the player I sold to the guy from Alaska get's his player, and it is in one piece! The good news is, it's a SGT250, and, like everyone says, they run like a tank!!! Very Happy

Discs that start out clean but get noisy near the middle are probably damaged. And especially if you're serious about collecting, you NEED a stereo player with A/V out jacks- I have mine connected to a newish Pioneer receiver and it upconverts the picture to 1080p resolution!

I agree stereo is the way to go! The movies that have that "fuzzy" in them, are unfortunately the ones that were on the bottom of the stack. You see it on Ebay all the time. I NEVER bid on a stack of a lot of CEDs that are lying flat, I bought a "pig in a poke" batch from a guy, they came with a player, he shipped me the 55 movies, half at a time. I quickly fixed the player, and I didn't have much money tied up in them. Thank Goodness. The first batch arrived, they looked great, the movies, were total fuzzy, and jumped everywhere. Two days later the second batch came, they were near perfect! I could of gone back to his house and told him the ones that were on the bottom of the stack!!! So, that said, all you newbies out there, store your movies vertically make them stand up! At attention!!! If you get a batch, like someone said, CAREFULLY check to make sure none are cracked or broken, then cull out the fuzzy ones, and cherish your good ones. We are moving to Louisville next Wed. I had a doctors appointment Yesterday, so we took our most cherihsed items on up to leave at tne new place. I took all 340 of my movies:) I could spend HOURS discussing these great players & discs!!!

Just wait until you have to move a collection of 1000 or more- I think the last time I moved took me at least 3 car trips to move them all!

OH YES! ONE MORE THING!!! I have my SGT250 hooked up to my Onkyo receiver and Bose speakers, (6 speakers) and a 52" Samsung Plasma screen TV and it loooks soooooooo good!!! Now, I will say this, it doesn't compete with Avatar on BluRay, but it still does look great on my big screen. I still might have an SJT300 for sale right after Christmas!!!!.
