So a while back I found a CED player with five movies. I looked it up, saw that it wasn't in production much and figured I was probably not likely to find more movies... so when I found that the CED player had an issue I just figured it wouldn't be worth messing with...

The issue is that after playing for a while the picture will start going from correct color to bleeding off-color, to black and white, then bleeding off-color, and back to correct color, over and over and over again untill I'm done watching(and on a newer set like the one that I'd rather be watching movies, it just goes in and out of the TV's blank "no signal" screen)... I can flip the movie back over to the first side, and what looked perfectly fine over an hour ago(the first part of the movie) will be doing the same color issue.... I'm guessing it's something to do with the RF modulator(I don't claim to know squat about CED players)

Anyway... I somehow managed to score a huge load of CED movies here.. 25cents each... and now this issue with the CED player is suddenly a bigger deal...

My CED player is one of the first models... can't get the number off it since it's in someone's bedroom late at night right now... but it's got the wood grain on top and the off/play/load lever on side.. it's got mono audio, and RF is the only output...

...Now.. I suppose I could try to get the thing serviced, but I'd really rather have a stereo audio model with A/V outputs... Just seems though that all I've seen so far are the mono/RF only models.

Anyone know where I could get a better player?

All you need is a new turntable belt. When the belt starts slipping the picture will fade from color to black and white. Goto this web-site and order one. Very inexpensive.

Just wanna say that it REALLY annoys me how new TVs feel the need to put stuff on the screen when the signal cuts out- I got a new Vizio HDTV and my CED player is connected to my A/V receiver so I can have CEDs upconverted to 1080p, but since the player puts out no video signal before the disc starts playing, I get a box at the top of the screen telling me which input I'm set to during the first few seconds of playback! I have to hit a button on the remote to make it go away, then scan back to the beginning so I can watch the disc unobstructed!

Sure wish there was a way to do a custom programming of the TV's firmware so that it didn't do this!

Hey Rockin' Kat!

Along with a new belt, I suggest lubricating the Turntable spindle. You can use chain saw bar oil for the job. The job isn't so hard to do it's just a bit time consuming with the million screws RCA put on the J/G100 W. I'd be glad to give you more details on the ins and outs of the lube process. I will caution you there are some tricky spots and you can break a screw really easily, if you don't know where it is. Feel free to contact me at:

duckie909@hotmail.com

Also, you can find belts and more tips at www.cedatum.net
If you are looking for players with A/V outs, the best place to search other than local thrift shops is on ebay. Search under: Selectavision, Selectavision Player, CED Player, Videodisc Player, and Video Disc Player.
Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

-Howard

Hey Rockin' Cat,

Are you still around?
I'm not to far from you, was wondering if you are still collecting?
Have you found a stereo player yet?

Hi, R Kat,

I have a bunch of CED players that were left over from my Dad's "estate" (ha ha - it was just a little fixit shop) that the creditors missed. Now that the many years long probate is finally done, I can dispose of them. I'll be putting most of them up for sale at pretty good prices.

As I have been checking them out, many are still good and some not so good thanks to too much time in storage, but there is one SJT 200 stereo model that works fine, except for the rapid access and search buttons. Also, the front face appearance has some discoloration, but not terribly so.

If you want it, it's yours for the shipping price. Maybe the buttons only need some cleaning or maybe the pad needs replaced. If you're inclined to do the fixing yourself and you want me to throw in another 200 that's not working for parts, just pay the extra shipping.

Or if you want a model that is okay overall, I'll be putting some in the ads here on the site within a week or so. All of them but 2 Hitachi are RCA models. Regards!

What players do you have for sale other than the 2- 200's there?

Sorry I don't get the joke...? Anyway...

Well, I wouldn't sell those 200's, just let R Kat have them of he wanted to fiddle with them. One does play fine.

But other than that, from my memory (since the players are at another location), the working ones are like 2 of each of these - SGT 075, SGT 100, SGT 200, SGT 250, and several SJT SKT 90s and 100s, and a couple 200s and a 300. A non-working 400 that I might want to keep and see if it's repairable. Also one Hitachi VIP 2000 and Realistic CED-1 (Hitachi VIP 1000) both work. There's a few more that have small problems that might be fixable.

The saddest thing was that there were about 30 more players and over 2000 discs that we lost due to the way the court took care of the shop's creditors. They took all the assets and auctioned many of them off in a big lot and one person bought them all. We couldn't even be at the auction to see who got them. These were ones my Dad had been gathering while he was working at RCA and later when he retired. Some were ones he'd repaired and the owner never came back or didn't pay the bill.

I think also he had possibly a copy of every single CED title or was trying to get every one of them. He had this really sentimental notion about the CED format. The players we were able to keep were not considered part of the shop's assets so they were left out of the auction (mostly because they were stashed away elsewhere and not found until after).

There was also a big bunch of betamax, LD players and VHS too, some of which we did get to keep as well. There was one of the 1st Sony Beta models for sale ever in the US with the add-on separate timer device from 75 or 76, and one of the initial space-age looking LD players that came out in 1978 that had been on that 1977 Popular Science cover. Most of it went for pennies on the dollar.

Yeah I figured the 200's weren't for sale cause you were talking to Kat on those! If you are willing to sell the sgt-200, sgt-250, skt-100, sjt-100, skt-300, Hitachi VIP 2000, Realistic CED-1 or the 400 if you aren't gonna fix it. I'd be willing to buy many or all of those! I also am trying to get get every Ced or at least as close as I can get ! Last count was around 700! I am also trying to get at least 1 of each player. I feel bad you guys got scrimshawed out of the players and Ced's. One can only hope they went to a collector who will treasure them!

Sure, I would sell those to you and give you a fair deal if you wanted to buy all of them. Did you want the working models or are you just looking to use them for display? There are non-working models of those as well. Of course the 400 isn't working, but If you want it, I can forego trying a fix and just be happy with the 300 that I'll keep.

However, where would they have to go? I'll have to check on shipping costs too. Most likely I could ship no more than 2 in a box. In other words, each on in it's own box, then put together in a larger box, or just ship each individually if you prefer. Or even deliver them if you aren't too far. We are in So. California. Thanks...

We actually discovered later who bought the players and discs via an informant who happened to go to the auction. But never learned if they were a collector or just planning to resell.

I went to the house where the players are just now...

From what you want, here's what I have -

the Hitachi
the Realistic
SGT 200
SGT 250
SJT 100

Sorry, no SKT models, I was mistaken. The 300 and the 400 are SJT

Also there are SFT 100, SGT 075, and Zenith VP 2000.

Thanks!

I'd rather have workin ones, but I will take broken ones cause I plan on makin a crazy ent. center to hold all of them and have a jungle of cords to some type of switch box(s) to be able to use all of them on one tv! Yeah I am crazy!

I'm not sure about your questions. I may have been unconscious for most of it. Though I did go back to school, get a degree, and then decide to quit my retail job in spite of not having another job to go to yet. I just had my first real job interview in over a decade.

And now I've got an order in for belts to fix my CED player. Yay.
