Does anybody have a Pal player in the US? I'm curious as to the difference- other than the format. I don't see any listed in the museum (probably there, I just didn't see it)
If you do have 1, where did you find it and how long did you have to look? _________________ Scott

Scott,
There was a PAL player on ebay about a month ago. It was in fact a new player still in the original box and complete. I don't know if it sold or at what price. I believe it was a Hitachi style player, maybe a Realistic CED1. Apparently someone purchased it and didn't know how to hook it up here in the states. Very rare to see them pop up on ebay in the USA. Have you checked ebay.co.uk? I just checked and there are no players for auction nor any recently sold.
Maybe our friends across the ocean can provide some pictures and info.

I'm thinking shipping #25 from the UK would be cost prohibitive, but if I find one reasonable I may go for it.
This is a fun hobby after all.
BTW Dean, thank you for the goodies today, now I have start searching for more goodies.... you sir are a bad influence _________________ Scott

Scott,
A PAL player is a CED player that plays in the European (and others) PAL video standard. Our standard is NTSC. The PAL players only work in Europe and some other places in the world and will not operate in the US. There is a work around which involves converting the signal as well as the power supply. I believe Tom has the process mapped out on CEDmagic.
There are some CED discs produced only for the UK market. Also, the because of the standards difference, the players rotate the discs at different speeds. The PAL one I believe rotates slower, therefore allowing for more minutes per side.
Others on the forum, please correct me if I am wrong. And please add any information. |

| Unfortunately, you missed one about a month ago on ebay. It was a new in the box Realistic CED1 player. Don't know what it went for, but they are rare to see in the US. Heck they are rare even in the UK. |

When I go over the master list and see some of the concerts "sounds good, where can I get that" and then you see UK
So if I can find one that's *inexpensive* I'd love to pick it up _________________ Scott

Interesting set up to do it, I wonder how long ago Tom wrote it and if some components can be swapped out now?
I have a good friend that runs a computer repair place- so he might have what I need in the 'bin-o-junk' _________________ Scott

Many new HDTVs can display PAL, and some that can't will with the help of an audio receiver. I have a hacked Toshiba HD-A30 HD-DVD player that will play PAL DVDs at the right frame rate on my Vizio TV. The TV can take the HDMI signal from that player straight with no problem, but won't take it from the component or standard video jacks. If those are hooked to the receiver then converted to HDMI, the TV will take those so hopefully if I ever find a CED player or VCR that does PAL format I'll be able to use them.
I have one PAL CED of Dolly in London, but no player. On my SGT-250 it starts up the disc and lights the Stereo indicator, but it won't play any of the material. _________________ Videodisc and stereo sound- there's no better value around! |

| I too, have some DVD players that I either upgraded the chip or changed the firmware to make them region free. The DVD players will play all PAL DVDs on my HDTV, or any NTSC TV. I buy some DVDs from the UK and Australia. DVDs are pretty inexpensive on amazon.co.uk and the shipping is also very cheap. |

You know, I love DVDs. BluRays are wonderful and clear, but there is nothing wrong with Digital Video Disc. It is amazing how inexpensive they are now. I remember when the DVD came out, how excited I was to finally be getting another platter!!!! (yes it is much smaller) _________________ 1000 titles

There is no great difference, only the picture is a little better, because of the PAL TV System. Its easier to use them HERE, because we have to use the 110/220V transformer to use the US CED Players in Europe.
And you dont need a multi TV, or at least a TV that is able to reproduce NTSC signals.
Ive found my Player, years ago, on a flea market in Germany, for only 15 Euros, together with the CED Roobarb.
I think the seller hadnt the slightest idea what it was.
The player had some minor flaws and I was able to fix it.
Big problem is the small catalogue of movies for PAL. And a much bigger problem is, most of them are quite rare.
Its much more difficult to find PAL CEDs than NTSC CEDs, even in Europe. |

Standard PAL interlaced resolution is more scan lines than NTSC, however it is 25 FPS rather than 30 FPS, or I should say 50 interlaced fields per second vs 60 for NTSC. With less FPS, a higher number of scan lines were able to be place on the same bandwidth.
However, in actual viewing, the differences are not significant because of the lesser frame rate working against the higher scan line ability of PAL as far as the actual viewing experience goes. |
