CED VideoDisc and Player Discussion

Jack Kemp passed away today, and he's the only federal politician I know of who posed for a publicity photo with the CED system:



Notice that the movie being viewed is The Longest Yard, an appropriate title given Kemp's pro football career prior to being a Congressman, Housing Secretary, and Vice Presidential candidate.

The event in the photograph was a Congressional demonstration of the CED system hosted by the House Energy Subcomittee on Telecommunications, Consumer Protection, and Finance. The gentleman on the right is RCA employee Foy Wilkey who was involved with the early marketing of CED. He was editor of Test Disc T-0761, choosing the many clips from NBC TV specials that so effectively demo the CED system:

Foy Wilkey later headed development of the first generation of the RCA Dimensia system, a joint manufacturing venture between RCA and Hitachi:
