Has anyone else seen these? A number of laserdiscs for use in schools were put out by Learning Corporation of America, which come in plastic covers with a photo of a caddy-less CED videodisc on the front! Someone's got a few on Ebay right now, here's one of them (I stole the picture from Ebay, hopefully the seller won't mind too much) :

I got one of these a while ago just to have the cover; I can't tell what title the CED might be since you can't see the number stamped on it, but maybe someone can read the barcode! The disc has a 1992 copyright on it, so it was well after CED had become but a footnote in video history.

I remember these very well. When I was in high school (1990-1994) I worked in the school library and media storage area. We had a whole set of these "videodiscs" that were for students who wanted to research different colleges and universities around the country. You basically looked up the name of the college you were interested in in a paper catalog and it told you which disc/side/chapter a short documentary was on. The picture itself is an artists representation of the reflective properties of optical media and the term videodiscs was just used so students knew those were videos and not one of the other oversized media storage discs being utilized in institutions of higher education.

I figured those were the discs you were talking when I saw the title of the post. I actually have some of those - my brother got them from a school that he used to teach at. I really didn't notice it at first, and then one day, I was like, "wait a minute - that's a CED...and these are laserdiscs". I thought it was a little funny that they would do that, but perhaps they had intended to produce CED videos and then put them on laserdisc, but used the same artwork. I've seen some RCA-produced SelectaVision titles that were later released by RCA on Laserdisc, and they had the exact same CED artwork, only without the "SelectaVision" logo.

I've seen a similar thing, in reverse: the old DiscoVision laserdiscs started with a fanfare, similar to the ones that RCA put at the beginning of CED videos. Well, if you play the Smokey And The Bandit CED, it starts with the music from the DiscoVision fanfare - that flipped me out the first time - I was like "ummm......I thought I was using my CED player, not my Laserdisc player...". At least they didn't actually put the DiscoVision fanfare video on the CED.
