I saw something funny on eBay that I figured I'd mention just for grins. I saw a listing for an SFT-100 with several CEDs and a few LASERDISCS.
I sure hope the seller didn't actually try to play the laserdiscs on the machine, or think that the machine can play them.
I would hope that the seller knows the difference, but then again, if the seller did, they might have listed the laserdiscs on a seperate auction (it's like selling HD-DVDs with a Blu-Ray player).
It's funny how after all these years, people still get them mixed up. I recently had to explain to my mom that my laserdiscs are not the same kind of disc that our old videodisc player (SFT-100) played. I've seen a used book store with a big sign in their CED section warning people that the discs won't play on a laserdisc player. And from viewing eBay listings, I get the impression that some people think that CEDs and laserdiscs will play on their DVD player or their VCR. Maybe some people just get ALL of the video formats mixed up. I bought a Beta video at a thrift store years ago, and the checkout lady wanted me to be sure that I knew it was Beta and wouldn't work in a regular VCR. I explained that I was aware of that and was buying it to test an old Beta VCR that I aquired. She said a LOT of people buy Beta tapes and bring them back griping that they don't fit their VCR. |

Okay, I promise I won't keep going on and on about my eBay findings, but I did find another one that I thought was interesting. Here's a portion of the item description (keep in mind, this is an RCA SGT-075):
It is very simple in operation, we personally have never seen this type of player before.. These Video Disc players came out right before DVDs, but were never big in the U.S. Go here for a little more history about these players and movies... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laserdisc
These definitely are neat the way they take the disk out of the holder, it is almost like magic!! We don't know what to tell you about this other than it is simple to use and it works. It hooks up to your TV via coaxial cable, no RCA jacks.. You flip the switch to Load/Unload, slide the entire movie cartridge in and pull it right back out, the actual disk stays inside. Then, flip the switch to Play and the movie starts right away, no annoying previews to fast forward thru! The fast forward and rewind buttons work flawlessly, just as smooth as a DVD. All functions of this unit worked fine..
We tried out 10-15 movies that we are currently listing and they all played ok, but some had a little color variation that I think that a head cleaner, or eye cleaner, or whatever these things use would clear right up.. It has sat for a long time, everything gets a little dusty.. The case is nice, the only thing we can find wrong is that this thing is heavy, almost 22 pounds.. |

| Well, I found another weird listing that's got me puzzled.....it's an SFT-100 with "THE ORIGINAL REMOTE". There's even a picture of the player, which is obviously an SFT-100, with an actual SelectaVision remote. Surely there wasn't a version of this player that had remote control operation, right? I'm just wondering, though, how this player wound up with a SelectaVision remote control. Maybe the seller found the remote at a thrift store and assumed it would work on any player that said "SelectaVision"? Hopefully whoever buys it won't be a fool and complain to the seller or put a post on this forum, saying "How come my videodisc player's remote doesn't work?". |
