Ive inherited the TED Bildplattenspieler by my grandpa. He had some movies, some were splitted in 8,9,10 parts, because the TED Bildplatte ran only 12 minutes in maximum. He was more in front of the Bildplattenspieler, changing disks, instead of watching the movie. The short playtime killed the system. VCRs were already on the market, ( VCR and later the LVR System ), that had 1 hour or even 2 hours of playing time.
If RCA would had examined the german market carefully, they could had foresee the fate of CEDs. |

| Thats correct ! But they lost zillions of $ on this System. If they hadnt postponed it again and again. If they had released it in the early 70s..... |

Maybe, maybe not.
I think CED was doomed to failure either way.
Had they released the format in time to compete with DiscoVision and before the advent of widespread video rental, the discs would've been the multi-layer variety that they've had so much trouble with concerning delamination, so there would've been serious problems with disc defects that could give CED a bad rap. |

Well, I disagree. An examination of the German format would have merely led to the conclusion that one needed more time per side to make the format feasible.
As others said here, the delays in implementing the format were more of a problem contributing to its failure than most realize. The fact that every media format tends to be supplanted by newer formats would have caused it's eventual demise, but had CED been released in the mid 1970s as it could have been, there would have been much more widespread use of the format.
Let's not forget that it was RCA that engineered the acceptance of the VHS system over Betamax after Sony snubbed their request to have a longer tape speed for the US market. Not everything RCA did was too little and too late. |
