Over the weekend, I bought a Sears CED player with a huge collection of discs. Most of them were in good condition; however, some of them were badly damaged with writing & fingerprints. Someone actually took the discs out of the caddy & wrote on the discs with a pencil, and also left fingerprints all over them. I am not sure if they can ever be played again with this kind of damage. I would like to know if there is any hope for cleaning or repairing these discs, or what I should do with them.

This is ridiculous. What in the world would make someone want to write on a disc! If they were mine, I wouldn't play them in any of my players. I have talked with other CED enthusiast who say they "wash" the discs in distilled water. I have bought discs from people who say they wash their discs, and if anything, they have played worse than before. Of course it's just my opinion. It is wise to check discs when you buy them. I don't check every single one of them, even though I prolly should. Sorry for the long post, but to answer your question, No, I wouldn't think they could be salvaged. The lead from the pencil would prolly do damage to the stylus in your player.

Good luck!

I was very frustrated when I found them. I did not get a chance to check them because I went to a woman's house to buy them, and she wanted me to take the entire collection. Most of them are in good shape, but I guess these discs with pencil lead just have to go in to the trash; I can not think of what else to do with them.

Whatever you do, DO NOT PUT THOSE DISC'S IN YOUR PLAYER!!

The scratches from the pencil and fingerprints can and will destroy your stylus! If they are like you say they are, they are done, no washing can help it ever.

You saved your self some trouble checking the disc's first! I have to now... it's almost ocd for me hahaha! If I havent checked it, I will not allow it in any of my players!

Only disc's i have bought knowingly washed are from dombay and he uses a brush less vacuum record cleaner and they play fine for me but they will wear your stylus down more w/o the silicon? coating on disc.

If the caddies are clean just toss the disc or make art out of the bad disc's hahah! But if you ever get a trashed caddy and disc plays great you can swap the caddies!!

Yeah, that's a shame. I have heard of those who were able to somehow clean their discs with a vacuum device and did not take the silicon coating off. Oh, what those grandkids will do when nobody is looking.

I have a sad set of the 4 HOLOCAUST CEDs which are the complete mini-series and not released on LD. 3 of the 4 are fine, but one was dropped in a mud puddle, so that's a killer since I can't watch the complete series now.

It's really dirty, so I am at a loss as to what's best to do.

Thank you. It was released in Japan on NTSC format by Pioneer LDC, but I cannot enjoy watching it with the japanese subtitles blocking so much of the screen.

As far as I know, the US LD released was scheduled, but then canceled.

Maybe you are thinking of the documentary released by Image called Survivors of the Holocaust? I know of no others.

But if you have an LD copy of the dramatic series and would like to sell it, I'd buy it.

I was looking through my collection and decided to play girl groups, I put the disc in and it played. There was some noise in the middle of the screen and I assumed the disc was worn, later on I took the disc out and took a look inside, it was very badly scratched with fingerprints!

Just came on here to find out about damaged discs, is my stylus damaged now?
How do I make sure it's ok? It seems to play ok on other discs.

Would I need to stop playing on other discs and get it retipped?

I'll have to throw the disc away, lesson well learnt I think..

How disappointing! Sad

You did the right thing to stop playing that disc as soon as it showed troubles. It is possible to damage a stylus with bad discs, and I had a copy of Grease 2 that did this and I wasn't intime to save the stylus when it started skipping badly. Your stylus may be okay for a while still, just keep an eye on it.

I have a copy of Girl Groups that's still sealed and one that's opened, and also a copy on laserdisc.

Hey Rivrex, I saw the Holocaust discs on the RCA Selectavision Buy, Sell, Trade Face Book page.

Let us know what caddy's you have from the trashed discs, a lot of caddy's get damaged in shipping and need a replacement for the disc. I have a copy of Red Dawn, Rosebud Beach, and several of the Playboy discs that have damaged caddys if you have any of those. Thanks.

About Holocaust. I didn't see them, Beetle, I guess they are gone. But I'm not too good with Facebook.
