It is a tape measure with the CED logo on it that has the first RCA fanfare recorded on it.

My mom was like, "Oh thats nice, there's some Christmas music on it." LOL

Here's a bit of history on the CED fanfare recorded on the voice recording tape measure. The fanfare represents 23 notes of the Promenade from "Pictures at an Exhibition – A Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann" by Modest Mussorgsky. The entire suite varies at about 40 minutes in length and consists of ten widely diverse movements linked together by variable repeats of the Promenade.

Artist and architect Viktor Hartman had recently passed away when Mussorgsky composed this suite in 1874, and each movement represents a painting at an exhibition of his art. The Promenade represents the viewer walking reflectively from picture to picture.

Pictures at an Exhibition is well represented on YouTube and below is a sampling of some of the performances - everything from solo piano and guitar to marching band.

If you have time, watch/listen to the first 90 seconds of each to catch the full opening Promenade. My favorite amongst these is ELP, but they are all tours de force.

I have been out of town since last Thursday, and my in laws really do live "over the river and thru the woods"! It's beautiful and peaceful to visit there, the drawback is no cell phone service, no internet service, and NO CED PLAYERS!!!
We got back home today and I found this little package in my mailbox! Thanks much Tom!!!! I smile every time I push the button!!!! It will take it's rightful place with my drink bottle from last year!!!!

I mailed these out to you, so they just haven't arrived yet. Opa-Locka is about as far away from Portland as you can get and still be in the USA !

PostPosted: Tue Jan 03, 2012 5:20 am    Post subject: Re-recording the CED Fanfare onto the Tape Measure Reply with quote

Don't worry about recording over the fanfare, as it's easy enough to put it back in. The original intent of the tape measure was to measure an object and then recite something like "twelve and three-quarter by fourteen by one-quarter inch" into the unit while the figures are still fresh in mind. But I've seen kids make far more creative use of the brief record time!

A CED player can be used to re-record the fanfare, but it is easier to pull up a YouTube video of the fanfare on your computer. A smartphone can also be used for playback, as the ADC in the tape measure is not hi-fi. This YouTube fanfare with the "surprise" ending works well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cmX9y0w5TY

Press RECORD the instant you see the fanfare graphics appear and hold it down until the tape measure beeps and stops recording. You might have to repeat it a couple times to get the timing right, as the tape measure has just enough record time to get all 23 notes in.

Tom - mine just showed up today, and I am beyond thankful, esp. considering I was a self-centered chump and totally forgot to reply to your requests for an address update.

Anyway, thank you again for this, and even though I can re-record it as you describe I am still terrified of hitting REC. Ha!

Happy (belated) Holidays!

I'm glad you got it! The email wasn't bouncing, so I figured the snail mail address was still good.

PostPosted: Thu Jan 12, 2012 4:06 am    Post subject: Inside the Voice Recording Tape Measure Reply with quote

If you're curious about what's inside the tape measure, but don't want to take it apart, here's a picture of the innards:

All the signal processing circuitry of the tape measure is contained under the black blob on the circuit board labeled U1. If this tape measure had been made back in 1981 it would have been the size of a CED player, considering the number of RAM chips it would take to store 12 seconds of audio. The Commodore VIC-20 computer from that time contained only 5 kilobytes of RAM.

And note the one-half Watt speaker, which accounts for the rather loud sound that comes out of this thing. One recipient gave it to his three-year-old , who developed a habit of constantly re-playing while strapped in the car seat. Dad was able to muffle the sound somewhat by applying clear Scotch tape over the speaker grill.
