|
| hey guys.....just decided to register with the forum. i've been haunting ced magic daily since i bought my first disc a few weeks back. i know that must be a common story by now! i collect vhs, beta, laserdisc, and now ced also. bought a player from ebay that ended up having a problem where the player arm didn't move. that one is being returned, and i will be purchasing a replacement player from RIXREX. just wanted to say hi, and glad to be here! |

ooh, i forgot to mention...the player i bought was an SGT-100. love the look of those earlier models. i also have a smallish collection of ced (around 10 titles currently) but no player right now! AGH!! we need to fix that soon.
anyhow, i have the feeling that ced will be the new VHS for me personally. i have an entire room in my house dedicated to just vhs. i have tons and tons of rare, oop titles. i have been collecting those since i was a kid, and never sold off the "good ones" like so many people have.
stumbled upon some ced disc the other weekend.....and while i had HEARD of it, i had never seen a player in operation, etc etc. i went online, found the memories of videodisc stuff on youtube, checked out cedmagic and i was hooked. i MUST find one of these players i thought!!
after a highly disappointing ebay experience, i'm anxiously awaiting the replacement player from rixrex since he really knows his stuff, and i'm sure i'll be very happy!! |

Welcome to the boards! I have only been posting here for less than a year myself and everyone has been very kind.
I am a collector like yourself and ran across the CED format later in life (I never had any when they were first marketed).
I was intrigued with the format when I first learned about it. My only current complaint is that my wife and I had a baby this year and now her room is right next to my office. Changing the discs or flipping sides can be a little loud at times when you are trying to be completely silent for baby not to wake up. I have nice wireless headphones that keep the audio silent at least! _________________ My SJT400 keeps me warm MIDWINTER when the OSD board overheats!

| awesome! thanks for the welcome.......yeah, i can't wait to have a functional player here. i bought some more CED discs this weekend, and have more on the way in the mail from a friend. i'll be so thrilled to finally sit down and WATCH a whole film on the format. the non-working player i got via ebay just killed me! so disappointing! i'm sure i'll be checkin' in on the forums quite often, so thanks for the warm welcome! |

Just out of curiosity is Laserdisc/VHS the newest formats you collect, or do you have any more current format collections?
I collect everything from Vinyl and CED to Blu-Ray and SACD. Just curious how many others on this board have such a broad spectrum.
I know that Jesse Skeen seems to collect everything. _________________ My SJT400 keeps me warm MIDWINTER when the OSD board overheats!

hey there....well, i collect dvd too. i just don't have a tv worth putting bluray on yet, so i don't do those, but probably will within the next few months.
my vhs collection is enormous, and i just love the vintage covers, etc. i have bins and bins full in my basement, plus a whole room full of horror tapes.
the video is rather old, and much much more has been added, but you can take a look at my little nerd hobby out of control in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k_ZNm2ZDkQ&feature=g-upl&context=G282c373AUAAAAAAAAAA
honestly tho, ced is the most impressive technologically speaking to me personally. it's novelty, sure...but the science behind it is fascinating! everyone has heard how lasers read discs, etc etc.... |

WELCOME TO THE CLUB!!! It is exciting to see so many "new" people joining the site. It is amazing how many people are becoming interested in our little format. I can't help you with your problem, but I do welcome you!!! _________________ 1000 titles

i used to feel like i was the only one that missed old video stores, old vhs tape covers, etc etc.................and now those groups are becoming increasingly crowded. it seems like the hipster thing to do now i guess. kids that never had anything BUT dvd are now into doing the retro tech thing perhaps.
i can't say CED isn't new to me, but i'm totally intrigued, and finding ced's now feels to me like i felt when i got my first "big box" vhs tape. love at first sight! |

I am new to CED, while being a 20 year laserdisc nut. My first player, an SKT400 should arrive in a couple days, along with "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and a few stereo music titles.
So I now collect
CED
Laserdisc
VHS
S-VHS (I have a svhs 2 cassette promotional copy of "Godfather III"
DVHS (DTheater)
HD DVD
Blu ray
Still looking for Betamax, Super Betamax, Betamax (EX?) |

| betamax is alot of fun....people will just give them to you! i get the "why the hell would you wanna collect THAT?" from people all the time, but even other collectors! people just don't understand why it's cool. i don't care if they do or not, the more for me then!! ld is alot of fun for sure....but the discs can get super expensive. vhs has gotten to be quite a crowded field lately, and it's tough to get what you really really want for less than about $40 for the good tapes. ced is the most fun i've had in a long time!! |

| Betamax was the only way for me to get all of Kurosawa's films at a good price. However, I don't find LDs that expensive except for the uncommon, rare ones. Same for VHS. |

| well, certain labels/titles on vhs can go up into the hundreds of dollars. i know a guy that paid $700 for one tape. beta not so much.......alot of japanese ld's can go up to $100 easily. depends on what kind of stuff you're interested in. for more mainstream stuff, ld and vhs.....places are literally GIVING them away. |

That's cetainly possible, since I don't collect Japanese LDs. The only one I ever got was the Song of the South LD, and it was close to $100. I'm not a big fan of foreign subtitles when the audio is in English, though I don't mind English subtitles on a foreign film.
I do collect PAL LDs from the UK for the films that were not released in the US on LD, but they are not overly expensive. For a US released LD, a few have gone over $100 that I've seen, but I would not bother with them if the release was available on DVD. I did pick up an LD of Sleepy Hollow for $40 and that's about as high as I'll go.
I saw House at the Edge of the Park going for near $200, but I got the Shriek Show DVD release of it for way, way less, and it's a great quality transfer. |

rj-
(hey bro...check your email and get back to me if you can, please.)
as far as ld goes, i generally try to stay UNDER $20 on ebay and only buy films i actually really want to watch. that's worked out pretty well for me. if it was something really unique or rare, i'd never go over $40 personally.
for foreign stuff, i like having my favorite movies in the most bizarre formats/foreign releases, etc etc. and find that entertaining. especially if you have seen it many many times....it's fun to watch it on a new format or see an alternate release or artwork.
as far as "in the wild" hunts go, they're usually so cheap that i'll buy most items as long as i have a general interest in them, or perhaps i know someone else that'd buy/trade with me. |
