With so many people now having cell phone cameras, I thought it would be interesting to have a topic where collectors can post pictures of CEDs they've discovered at thrift stores and flea markets. I find them so infrequently nowadays that it really is a picture-worthy event. Here are some I came across yesterday (and didn't purchase) at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 10174 SE 82nd Ave., Happy Valley, Oregon. If it hadn't been for that DiscoVision sticking out, I might have missed the CEDs under the rack!

I found a good stash of LaserDiscs at st. Vincent DePaul in Albany, never seen any CED's though. They wanted $5 a piece for the LD's. I'll probably dump my duplicate CED's into the church fund raiser- see if we can spark any interest.

These Salvation Army discs all had "Collectible" price tags and were priced from $2.99 to $19.99. It looked like pricing was determined by the popularity of the movie, so common CED titles were priced higher than rare ones.

The Smokey and the Bandit II DiscoVision was $14.99. It's ironic that it happened to be a Smokey and the Bandit title, as the original version on CED plays the DiscoVision fanfare music behind the Universal logo - an apparent joke by MCA included on the master tape supplied to RCA.

We went to another Peddlers Mall in Lexington, KY and although there were no CEDs, but they had a rack stocked full of laser discs. They were in the plastic wrap, and it looks like they were new, they had them for 15.00 each.

I go to thrifts constantly around my area. I hit every one of them up at least 2 times a week.

In the past 2 years I have only seen ONE CED in a thrift store. It showed up the same day that about 50 laser discs (also rare in thrifts around here) came in. I bought a bunch of the laserdiscs for $.50 each because they thought they were records, but the CED was something stupid that I didn't want.

Do you remember the price of the CED?

Went into a Pawn Shop today in a small town and hidden on the floor under a shelf was a wooden crate of records and about 6-8 CED's

I hadn't heard of most of the movies. I grabbed the Charlie Brown and left the rest. They were asking $3 each

You should have bought The Private Eyes, my kids loved this movie. It is a great family movie and very funny.

OH what I wouldn't give to find a place that has a box of "records"!!! My wife and I love going to Thrift shops, called Peddlers Malls, there are about 15 of them in a 100 mile radius. I have found 2 CEDs in all of them. I found one Peddlers Mall in Lexington, KY, they had dozens of Laser Discs, very nice ones. The 2 CEDs i found were 15.00 EACH! I bought the first one, (Jailhouse Rock) The second one was Star Trek TMP (only one disc) Now that I know I can get them a heck of a lot cheaper.

You'll be hard pressed nowadays to find good bargains in the big national thrift stores as they are getting adept at checking going prices out on unusual items like CEDs before putting them out for sale. It is possible, however slim.

I've always found better deals in the smaller church or other charity thrift stores. One of the best deals I ever found was a Pioneer CLD D515 laserdisc player that plays both PAL and NTSC discs, and it works just fine with the HD tv set. (meaning the set will accept both PAL and NTSC signals.) Got it for $8 only, after looking for ages for one on ebay and always getting outbid.

Well I honestly have not seen CEDs in a thrift store since about 2005, and they wanted way too much initially. Then they dropped the price and I bought some.

I saw a whole box of them back in 2002 or 2003 at a small thrift store and was able to get the whole box for a small price.

And that's been it in the last 10 years. I wonder how many CEDs went to landfills or incinerators? Sad to think of that.

They had both parts for $3 each

My local goodwill always has CED's from time to time but they want $3.00 a pieces. I miss the $.50 cent days. I guess they are checking eBay and places to get their prices. I've found a few good ones, but most of the time nothing good.

Yesterday, I visited the same Happy Valley, Oregon Salvation Army thrift store as in my first post, and they had a new batch of CEDs priced at $5.99 each. These were nicely displayed along with a couple LaserDiscs and LPs:

If the price is decent you ought to get Mother Lode. It wasn't released on LD in the US.

I didn't know that about Mother Lode. I have a copy that is still in cellophane.

I actually ran in to my local used book store this weekend to see if any new stuff had shown up that caught my interest. I happened upon a lot of 95 discs.

I would have taken a snapshot with my camera phone, but I was so surprised to see any CEDs in a store here in Phoenix that I just went ahead and snatched them up. I had $200 in credit at the store and they were selling the lot with a player for $250. I talked the manager in to giving me the whole lot for $200 so I took them home.

Nothing exciting in the lot and they weren't worth $200 to me (except that I have had the $200 in credit at this place for over a year and thought I would never use it). Some of the two disc sets were in pretty nice shape so I will be able to replace some of my rattier copies in my collection.
