This morning I saw a SJT400 Disc Player at the Value World store at Keystone Av. and 52nd St. here in Indianapolis IN.
I plugged it in: L displayed but door didn't open, player made a loud grinding noise. Store manager would not allow me to take the cover off to see what was wrong with it.
The price is $25.02. I didn't buy it; I don't need more projects.

Sounds like it might be a bad function motor or the function motor belt gooed up the gears and creating the grinding noise with the motor. Unfortunately previous owners have treated their players like garbage and the poor players end up in such sad state.

For $25, it might be worth it as a project. I would definitely have picked it up at that price.

Thanks for the tip, Ron. I picked it up and it was, indeed just a gooed-up belt. Took about 100 qtips and a little isopropyl to get it cleaned up, just happened to have a belt, and now it works. Now I can have one in the other room, and I knew that extra remote I picked up along the way would come in handy someday!

Great find, Matt!

I love my SKT400. Nice to have the one player that can play every CED produced. (SJT400/SKT400)

RCA Service Co issued a service advisory on the best way to clean off a function belt that had turned to black goo.

This black stuff is awful and sticks to the fingers and anything else.

The recommended solvent is household ammonia. Today this comes in an easy form as Glass Cleaner with ammonia.
